Dusit Thani Hotel Bangkok to close

Post by Nereus »

For any of the old hands on here you should recall when the illuminated spire on top of the hotel was the most obvious land mark in Bangkok. Long since been dwarfed by more recent developments.

Dusit Thani reiterates  job security for staff

Dusit Thani Plc (DTC) has reaffirmed its "no lay-off" employment policy in preparation for transferring employees during the construction period of a new project.

The Dusit Thani Bangkok will continue to operate as usual until June 30, 2018, the company said in a release. From July 2018 on, all staff will continue to be employed and allocated to other properties.

The announcement follows a recent report that Dusit Thani, a leading hotel and property development company, will start work on a landmark mixed-use project in partnership with Central Pattana Plc.

The report raised concern that the first closure of the iconic hotel since 1970 would leave workers with decades of service unemployed.

Suphajee Suthumpun, group chief executive of Dusit Thani, said earlier that the new project would become a new landmark in the same manner that Dusit Thani Bangkok made history 47 years ago.

The hotel recently signed an agreement with the Crown Property Bureau (CPB) to continue leasing the plot at the intersection of Silom Road and Rama IV Road on which the Dusit Thani Bangkok is located.

The lease will be extended by 30 years with the right to extend for another 30 years and an added seven-year grace period.
Dusit Thani has been granted permission from the CPB to lease additional land, increasing the plot area from 19 rai to 24 rai.

The project in Sala Daeng will feature a hotel, residences, retail and offices, plus green space.

The estimated project value is 36.7 billion baht, 60% of which will come from Dusit Thani and the rest from Central Pattana.

"Our goal is to develop a project that benefits both tourists and the general public," Dusit Thani said. "This plot lies right at the epicentre of the metropolis in the heart of the business and retail districts, as well as at the intersection of multiple mass transit systems such as the BTS and the MRT."

Dusit Thani Bangkok to close next April (2018)

Post by PeteC »

Old Thailand and Bangkok hands may want to book a room for a night close to the end date.....just for nostalgia. :D :( Pete

The Dusit Thani Bangkok, flagship hotel of Thailand-based Dusit International, will cease operations on April 16, 2018, ending a 48-year run as a landmark of pioneering design in the capital, it was announced on Friday.

The site on Rama IV Road will host a mixed-use development slated for completion in 2022.

Founded by Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui and opened on February 27, 1970, the Dusit Thani was once the city’s tallest edifice and largest hotel.

General manager Sukanya Janchoo called it “an icon made everlasting through all those who share its history”.

“The series of events and promotions we are introducing have been specially designed to thank our guests, staff and stakeholders for their loyal support, as well as commemorate the hotel’s rich heritage, which will be carried over into our exciting new chapter to come.

“The Dusit Thani legend will continue,” she promised.

The development to rise on the site will be built in partnership with Central Pattana and incorporate a new Dusit Thani Bangkok hotel.

Many of the trees on the property will be conserved, as will the original hotel’s distinctive, handcrafted teakwood décor, historical ornaments and instantly recognisable spire.

Construction of the new hotel will start on adjacent land currently occupied by derelict buildings. The new hotel is expected to be completed in 2022 and the rest of the project by 2024.

Meanwhile prospective guests of the original Dusit Thani have 10 months left to take advantage of accommodation promotions and special packages on offer.

Yes, I thought I had seen it before too. I guess The Nation published a new article today because the close date has changed from end June 2018 to April 16, 2018. Pete

That's where I stayed on my very first trip to Bangkok 36 years ago... as a superb hotel back then.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

It was our regional corporate hotel until about 6 years ago. We held all of our regional meetings there and probably booked 2,000 room nights annually at 2,600 Baht including the meeting packages. Great hotel but unfortunately their prices increased exponentially over a couple of years and we moved on to other hotels in the city.
It would be great to stay there one more time before the doors finally close and the place becomes another shadow of its former self.

The closing date has been brought forward once again:

Update Nov. 23: The Dusit Thani announced today it will cease operations two months earlier than expected. The hotel will close in April and be knocked down two months later in July.

It is spacious and nicely landscaped but nobody can make any money from trees and grass so it has to go.

Final check-out at landmark Dusit Thani postponed

https://property.bangkokpost.com/news/1 ... recent_box

The Dusit Thani Bangkok hotel has been given a late check-out.

Originally due to close on April 16 this year, the flagship hotel will now remain operational to Jan 5 next year, according to Dusit International. Final check-out will now be at 2pm on Jan 5, 2019.

The hotel’s closing date has been postponed to allow Dusit and its partners more time to add greater value to the new incarnation of the hotel, which will open as part of a 36.7 billion baht landmark mixed-use project to be built in partnership with Central Pattana Plc.

Suphajee Suthumpun, Group Chief Executive of Dusit International, announced the hotel’s redevelopment last year. Dusit International plans to create a new city landmark that boosts the area’s appeal, enhances the existing infrastructure, creates new opportunities for local businesses, celebrates Thai culture, and elevates the brand’s standing internationally.

Founded by Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui and opened on Feb 27, 1970, Dusit Thani Bangkok was once the city’s tallest edifice and largest hotel.

“While our scrupulous attention to detail means we must extend the project timeline by eight months, we are delighted that guests now have more time to experience the hotel as it stands. We plan to enrich that experience by hosting a series of special events throughout the year,” Mrs Suphajee said.

Out of nostalgia I had booked ( not paid for yet ) the previous closing night date this April

Good to see it extended - the Dusit is a really great bkk hotel and if you join their Gold club ( no charge ) it gives a discount of 20% off food and beverage
It's a nice breakfast buffet in Dusit Hua Hin for less than 500 b
