Five die in wastewater pond at CPF factory

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... pf-factory

Five people died after they entered a wastewater treatment pond owned by CPF Food Products Co in Bang Na district of Bangkok late on Friday morning.

Four of them were trying to help a visiting student who fell into the pond.

Rescue workers rushed to the poultry feed company on Soi Bang Na-Trat 20  about 11am after being informed of people falling unconscious in the 4-metre-deep wastewater pond.

Initially it was reported a maintenance worker who climbed down a ladder into the pond fell unconscious because of lack of oxygen. Four others who tried to help him suffered the same fate.

It later emerged the incident happened while two students were visiting the plant. One of them fell into the pond. Four company employees tried unsuccessfully to rescue him, at the cost of their own lives.

One was a veterinarian employed by the company.

The three men and two women reported to have died were named as Somporn Boonban, Charnchai Phanthunakhin, Laksana Saenthaweesuk, Wai, and Chatree Seethandorn.

Gross negligence on the behalf of CP.

A company like that ought not to be letting visiting students (or anyone) anywhere near a situation with such a possible outcome as this.

You would have also thought that CP staff would have relevant safety training in such an environment.

There have been other reports from around the world that people have been overcome and even died just from the gas fumes in those pits. Very good chance they were unconscious or even dead before they went under in the liquid. Pete

I remember that some years a go, three members of a farming family in Northern Ireland died in similar circumstances in a slurry pond.
