So it's now been clarified that from Nov 1st there is 90 day amnesty. People smoking on the 24 beaches named will be informed of the law but there will be no punishment. A complete ban on ALL beaches will come into force at the end of the amnesty. That being Feb 1st.

No ifs or butts as Patong Beach starts enforcing no-smoking rules
Patong City has designated 20 smoking areas along Patong Beach in Phuket to comply with the smoking-ban-on-the-beach policy of the Marine and Coastal Resources Department (MCRD).

Patong City Administration Organisation on Tuesday opened the smoking areas in order to encourage the people not to smoke and drop cigarette butts on the beach, and instead support the department’s new policy. Patong Beach is among the first 24 beaches where the smoking ban will be introduced around the country through next February, as the MCRD applies the Marine and Coastal Resources Management Act to enforce the ban.

Violators of the ban will be punished with a maximum of one year in jail and/or a fine of up to Bt100,000. Patong City mayor Chalermluck Kebsab said his authority had designated the smoking areas along Patong Beach in order to reduce the amount of littered cigarette butts on the beach, prevent disruption to those who do not smoke, and encourage the public to follow the smoking ban on the beach. All 20 smoking areas are installed with clear signage informing people that they are designated areas where they allowed to light up.

From a first-day inspection, Chalermluck said that most locals and tourists had cooperated well and smoked only in a designated area. However, it was noticeable that there was still a sizable distance between each smoking area and there were still no signs to explain the rule about not smoking on the beach. “In order to support the MCRD’s policy of a smoking ban on the beach, the local authorities are also working with MCRD officers to inform local businesses and tourists about this policy,” the mayor said. “There will also be the distribution of leaflets in multiple languages informing about the smoking ban and smoking areas, at the hotels as well,” he added.

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: I wonder where those leaflets will go. Not into designated bins, for sure.

This is what I think about the recent rubbish -

Original first verse by Jenny Joseph, and my take...

WARNING
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens . . .

THAILAND
When I am on holiday I shall wear whatever I like
With a red had which might make you think I favour Taksin
And I shall spend my money on beer and cigarettes
And street food, and anything fake I can find
I shall sit down on the beach in the sunshine
And drink copious amounts of beer and smoke and have fun
And go to bars where young ladies will cater for my every need
And get away from the drudgery of everyday life in my hometown
I shall smile and be courteous to everyone I meet
And probably end up being arrested . . .

A lot of people either visiting or living here can't seem to grasp this part.

I have never smoked so I suppose I am one of the lucky ones, if people want to kill themselves that's up to them, the thing I hate is when you are having a meal and some tit thinks it's a good idea to start smoking

That kind of looks like a nice place to hang out in the shade. Maybe the beer girls and BBQ grills will be added later.

Kind of weird to have a hospital logo on a smoking tent. I can imagine BHHH may not even know how it's being used. Pete

I suppose smokers make good customers for a private hospital!
