I plan to stay 1 month in Pattaya to see old friends, then 1 month in

Choice
One month in each would probably be more cost effective with accomodation, as easier to get a good deal on a full months rent.
I can see where BaaBaa is coming from re a month in Pattaya these days, but with friends there, and careful choice of location, personally I think it could be bearable for some folks!
Its all down to personal choice with Chaam as well. Some find it too quiet. I think its fine, and would be a pleasant place to chill out. Others would recommend Bang Saphan though.
Doing Pattaya in the middle would increase travel costs. Personally I would do Pattaya first, then if you really can't hack it for a month theres the option to escape to HH earlier.
The thing about Thailand is that the best layed plans often go to pot anyway. Chill out and enjoy!

Travel is still a pain between Pattaya and HH so best do it first or last. If you do it first and fall in lust you may end up staying the whole 3 months there.
If you do HH first the same may happen and you will be in a much nicer area.
This leaves only one logical order available.
Cha Am, Hua Hin, Pattaya.
I would certainly do a southern trip between Cha Am and HH though.

plans
I may have mislead some of you. I am not comming over for 3 months,
but for at least a year, maybe for good. So any other recommendation,
you might have, please give them to me. As for staying 1 month at
each place, I just thought that it would take that long to see if I would
like to live there.
Thanks again,

whittler,
I think i would go to see your friends in Pattaya first for two reasons; one, it is a shorter trip from the airport after a long flight, and two, your friends may have a lot of relevant comments and ideas as to possible other destinations.
As guess has said, depending on your circumstances, you might well get swept off your feet at some point, and you should be wary of this and make sure you visit anywhere that takes your fancy; everyone is different and you might want to venture further east to Ko Chang for example, or further south, but it sounds like you are set on a beach destination, otherwise i would suggest you also head north and north east.
Let us know what you decide, and what you think when you are here - good luck and enjoy yourself

Yes, that does change things somewhat as the lustful wanderer says.
If you go fisrt to Pattaya you can then go south an visit Rayong, Koh Samet and Koh Chang. The back to Rayong to U-Tapao you can get a fairly low cost flight to Phuket. From Phuket go to Koh Phi Phi, Krabi (by boat), Ao Nang, Pan Gna, Khao Lak, the Similan Islands (by boat) and Khao Suk are all within easy reach.
If you finish that tour in Krabi you can get further south into the deep south or cut across to Nakon Si Thamarat, Ko Samui or Surat Thani. If you need a cross border stamp at this point you can go to Pedang Besar or Langkawi from Had Yai (well worth a visit anyway) by minibus.
From Koh Samui you can island hop up to Koh Tao and from there to Chumporn where you are back on highway 4 (Petchakasem Road. The road to Hua Hin, Cha Am and Bangkok).
There's plenty of coastal towns and parks I have not mentioned on the way.
Everybody who has been to these places has a different opinion so you really have to see them for yourself.

Thanks
I want to thank all of you for your input. You have made me feel very
welcome. I think I will follow Wanderlust's idea. I am 67 and a 28 to 30
hour flight does me in. It would be nice to just chill out and meet old
friends for awhile.
