When I'm checking into a hotel and they ask for my passport, I simply hand them my Thai driving license....never had any complaints or comments, maybe a slight improvement in attitude since they know I'm "Local" and prices have mysteriously dropped on 2 occasions, but no hassles.

Interesting to hear of the changes

I am planning a trip to Thailand in 2012 and it is good to hear this information.
Having just spent several weeks in Cambodia and Vietnam this does not seem an onerous duty. The Vietnamese Hotels retain your passport while staying. Despite obious risks of people getting hold of your passport without your knowledge it does save the issues of where to keep the passport safely. When I stayed with a family for a few days I had to register with the local police.
I can understand however that if you are an expat working in the country or under some other long term arrangement that it can be a pain in the proverbial.
We don't have ID cards in Australia so in theory there is no need to show ID at Hotels. However backpackers tend to ask for ID and often retain it for foreigners. I had an argument with one backpacker place that wanted to retain my drivers licence. I pointed out that since I had a car and was using it, under Australian Law that I had to have my DL on me all the time. I believe that retaining my ID was against the law. It all ended when suddenly they had no rooms left.
Sorry off topic a bit.
