I went to their reception last year and asked about room rates for certain dates (on behalf of some customers
of ours)..they quoted me absolute full whack for the 10 days I asked about.
So I very politely asked the receptionist if they have a computer I may use..
..when she replied "yes..why?" I told her I was going to book her rooms online from Hilton's own web-site
at 50% discount to the price she had just quoted me..she pulled a face, & then ignored me.
I still got a smile from the doorman as I thanked him using 'polite' Thai on my exit.
I have heard of many deals going at the Hilton, but go to their site & check there.

Yes, I had the same issue at a 4 star hotel in bangkok. The desk wanted about 3K a night and I told them it was 1.75k on the net. They wouln't budge. So went over to the computer, logged on, booked using a third party, printed the voucher out, went over to the same lady at reception and gave her the voucher with the price on, she just smiled and booked me in for an extra 2 nights. Voila. Think they have no control on reception!

In all fairness, this is the case with the majority of the large hotel chains I've used - Intercontinental/Holiday Inn, Marriot, Hilton etc. and certainly not restricted to Thailand. You'll always get a better deal on the net and in the past the majority of the time this is what the hotel have actually advised.

Intercontinental/Holiday Inn will guarantee lowest available prices on the net - if you find lower elsewhere, they'll match it. I would assume other chains to be similar.

I do also use a few sites/agents to compare rates: -

http://www.octopustravel.com
http://www.wotif.com
http://www.booking.com

One of the advantages of http://www.booking.com is that you do not need to pay up front.

The big well known hotel chains have a standard clause in their contracts which says that agents/third parties are not allowed to offer the rooms at lower prices than the official hotel website. Hence they can guarantee the lowest price.
So, with big chains it is often better to deal directly with the hotel.
The agents need the big hotels because there is always demand and profit margins can be lucrative.

On the contrary the agents do not really need the smaller hotels, but these hotels need the agents. So in that case the agents lay conditions upon the hotels and tell the hotels that they cannot sell under the agents rates (on the official hotel website or to walk-ins). If they do the agents will no longer appoint any of their marketing and sales budget on that particular hotel as there are hundreds of other hotels to spend it on. Therefore with the smaller hotels better deals can often be made through third parties.

But of course this is a theoretical simplification and it can all be a little more complicated.
We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future.

Hello
A friend of mine who was a hotel manager explained some time ago that most hotels apply what he called a walk in rack rate(usually full price), the only time he dicounted this was if people came into the hotel very late at night when it was unlikely that a room would be sold and this again depended on overall occupancy rates

Holiday Inn in the UK are the same, reception are not allowed to discount, but online rates are better. This is not confined to hotels, we found a rate on Emirates Airlines online, went to their town office to book, their rate was higher, the ticket agent advised us to go home and book the flights on our computer. Same thing applied on the Channel Tunnel when we turned up, but by then it was too late to turn around. We had to pay full price.

Anyone who is smart enough to find this website wouldn't pay half what the Hilton asks..

Now you mention it neither can I  . This is unusual, as the list is usually very comprehensive. I'm sure when Admin come on line, they will sort it for you.
