Prachuab Hotels

Post by Korkenzieher »

Does anyone have any hotel recommendations for mueang PrachuapKiriKhan? Any search on the web is a mess of Hua Hin places, being in PKK province, but I am actually looking for a (long)weekend option in the town. So far, Hotel Nopporn seems to be the only one that is recommended of about 4 that I can find listed. There must be more though, surely?

Plese look at this website

[Mod Edit] I am sorry, but I cannot permit that link - this forum already offers hotel booking at equally good or better costs.

Thanks HappyGolfer, but the only places I found on [Mod Edit - rival site removed] are in the resort areas of SamRoiYod and Bang Saphan not in the town of Prachuapkirikhan itself. I have some names, mostly from the Bangkok Post accommodation search engine (http://www.bangkokpost.com/travel/accom ... hiri+khan/), but in trying to research the names the 2 most frequently occurring where people expressed an interest (Hadthong and Nopporn), Nopporn won hands down. A couple of others - much older guest houses - get very bad notices.

If the worst comes to it, then I can always book a night at the Nopporn, and take a look round, but if anyone has info of course it makes it easier.

Went to Prachuab for a 3 night mini-break last week.

There are 2 hotels I would recommend on the promenade with sea view.

1. Sun Beach Resort.
Yellow building at the south end of the promenade.
Relatively new, run by a German guy, swimming pool, nice modern comfortable rooms, 900 baht/night on 1st floor, 800 baht on the ground floor, rooms about the same size on both levels, very clean, believe they have a restaurant but don't know details or prices there.
We didn't stay there because we felt it was a bit 'snooty'

2. Had Thong Hotel
An older higher-rise concrete building with balconies facing the sea also on the promenade - Thai (Chinese) management.
850 baht/night with free wifi in the room - this is where we stayed.
Very friendly, good service and great restaurant.
We ate in the restaurant twice in the evening.
First time we asked if we could take our own wine - no problem.
They chilled it for us, supplied ice bucket and glasses with no corkage charge.

There were 4 of us
We ordered 1 prawn cocktail and 1 crab cocktail for starters, both served with bread roll and butter.
Main course: 1 sea bass fillet with thermidor sauce, boiled potatoes and veg, 1 white snapper fillet with meuniere sauce etc.
Plus 3 Thai dishes, including tom yam talay etc.
1 extra bottle of Hardy's wine, followed by 6 glasses of Grand Marnier
Total cost 1600 baht

They also have a massage service at 200 baht including room service.

One day I was sitting by the pool and took a bottle of wine with me.
I asked for a wine glass - no problem, then they brought the ice bucket with ice and checked periodically if I needed more - no charge!

Couldn't really fault anything - ok, the breakfast (not included) wasn't really what we wanted but there are plenty of places nearby, including a coffee shop next door with cappuccino at 30 baht a cup :)

We will definitely go there again.

All of the competing websites that were edited by the moderator offer the same affiliate links to hotels as we do: http://www.huahinafterdark.com/hua-hin- ... okings.php

If none in Prachuab are listed you will have to rely on personal recommendations like the above.

Thanks for the great, detailed hotel review Barry. If ever in PKK Town I'll certainly try the Had Thong Hotel. :)

A few more tips if you're going there:

1. Ao Manao - huge air force base open to the public - great place to relax with beach, cheap open air food places also with fresh seafood and a 10 hole golf course in sort of reasonable condition for 180 baht including trolley - go south down the promenade, follow road round to the right and the entrance to the base is on your left

2. Wako or Wa Kor - about 15 min drive south of Prachuab - big aquarium run by the Thai navy under royal patronage - also used as an educational facility for school groups etc, entry 20 baht per person irrespective of origin!!!

3. Just before the end of the promenade on the left on the way to Ao Manao, a new farang-run bar has opened. Can't remember the name but it's pretty big - only open in the evening, brand new pool tables, friendly and inexpensive.

4. The Breakfast Place - come out of the hotel on the promenade side and it's just there on the right. Run by a Swiss guy and his Thai wife - good range of breakfasts Swiss/German style including fresh brewed coffee for around 85 baht per head

5. Walk past the breakfast place a couple of minutes and there's a small pizza place - run by a French woman and her Thai rasta husband, opens 5 p.m. - good pizzas for around 160 baht, wine 80 baht/glass

6. Go out of the hotel at the rear and there's a cosy little coffee shop on the right, very friendly - fresh cappuccino 30 baht, sandwiches around 40 baht.

7. Anne's Bar on the north side by the beach. Turn left from the hotel along the promenade, turn right over the bridge and it's just down on the left. I think they're only open in the evening at the moment.
Run by a brit + Thai wife - English food menu with meals around 160 - 180 baht and, wait for it, Montclair wine at 50 baht per glass.

8. A great café/restaurant in the main shopping street - can't think of the name. Towards the southern end on the left and it opens out onto the street - it's the only place that looks sort of western, with tables inside and outside. Extensive menu of farang and thai food, good quality and extremely cheap.
We had lunch there - 2 farang meals, 3 Thai meals, 2 bottles of water and 2 large Leo beers all for 400 baht

9. Evening street market on the promenade road Fridays and Saturdays

10. The Burmese market at Dan Sinkhon is only a 20-25 min drive away - well worth a look on a Saturday morning, specialising in rustic furniture and orchids.

Enjoy

Thanks Barry some useful info. Just a couple of questions please = how far are the two hotels apart and are they both well situated for walking into town/restaurants etc and how far are they from the railway station - are they walkable or will we need transport.

The 2 hotels are less than 5 minutes walk from each other on the main promenade.
Only a short walk to town/restaurants from both hotels.
According to Google Maps, the railway station is 650 m or 8 minutes' walk from the fishing pier on the promenade.

I've stayed at the Sun beach just half a year ago and it was lovely. Very good rest, friendly staff and such.
I will choose this place again for upcoming stays.
If they were all booked, I would option for the Prachuap beach hotel.

Should I not have any female company accompany me while on a visit and overnite stay, is there any available along the promenade or at any of the above mention bars?

Mods, please feel free to move or delete this from the public part of the board.

PKK does not have any beer bar scene or such. It has a few sing a song shops which cater to locals.
The massge shops I visited were staight.
