Condo electricity fees

Post by PeteC »

Was scanning through some classifieds (not in HH) and came across a private party renting a studio condo on a daily basis. They listed a 5 baht per unit electricity charge in addition to the daily rate. Is this fair or too high, as I don't have an electric bill handy to do a calculation. Pete

As an FYI....the reason I posted this in accommodation is because over the years I have been hit with both extra electricity and water charges in a variety of guesthouses and serviced apartments throughout the country. It's a good thing for the traveler to be aware of, and what is a fair fee.

The aforementioned ad also indicated a 10 baht per day water fee. This looks like nothing, but it's 300 Baht on a monthly basis which is a lot of water usage for one person in a studio apartment. Pete

Thinking of the old times, I don't find 5 Baht per unit for the electricity too much, if it is in an apartment or town house rented on monthly basis. In real terms it might have been a bit cheaper but can't remember too well. However, the water bill seems too high.

I just posted the PEA electricity charges on another thread a few days ago: 3.4033 Baht per unit in Hua Hin. If it happened to be on Koh Samui it will probably be more. I guess that if you are the owner renting your unit out, 5.0 Baht per unit sounds reasonable.

I have not run up against the water charge before, but again it might depend on where it is and how they get their water supply.

Why is there an extra charge for water? Isn't water part of the monthly condo fees in Thailand? If yes, than there is no extra cost for the owner who renting out the unit.

To my knowledge each condo has an electric and a water meter. Neither is included in any fees as a general practice, although there may be some exceptions...as always. I've rented a condo twice here in the past and each had its own meters and individual unit responsibility. Pete

I guess my information is incorrect. I was told each unit is metered by an individual elecric meter, but water was metered for the whole complex.

This really has nothing to do with what the OP has posted on, they are entirely different situations.
However, I do not see how a Condo complex can make a blanket charge for water and include it in the common fees. The only water that could be construed as being "common", is that used on the garden, or swimming pool.
I know that in both the Condos that I own that is the case, and if you knew how Thais tend to waste water, I am sure that you would prefer to just pay for what you use!

I have owned several condos in my life, in New York, Florida, Fiji, Hungary and three in Hawaii, the water was included in the monthly fees everywhere. I currently own a condo both in Taiwan and Hawaii, and the situation is the same, water is included in the monthly fees. When I was in HH in October, the real estate agent said it was included in the monthly fees there too. (Maybe he meant it was included at the project I was looking at?)

300 Baht per month is totally a rip off for water expense!!! A single person living here shouldn't spend more than 100-150 THB for water a month.

Well I have lived in Condo Chain now for nearly 2 years.

Initially I rented a studio room from the condo management. Water 180/mth and Elec 600/mth

For the last year I have rented from a private owner a condo in Condo CHain 3 times larger than a studio room and I pay the same rate (10K/mth) but Water zero/mth Elec? well in one year I have paid 2 bills of around 450 bht When I asked why so low I was told. Water included in service charge and paid for by owner. Elec you only pay if you use more than 400 bht/mth. Apparently when you buy a condo your Elec is your responsibility and water is included in the service charge.

So I'm better off renting long term from a private owner

I'm an avid A/C hater and never use (9 floors up so good breeze into the condo from either NE or SW) so my monthly outgoings are 10K/mth and if I'm extravagant and leave all 4 fans running I might have to pay another 450/mth

Maybe I've just got lucky for once

Monthly waterbill for one-person household in a small villa with some flowers but with no washer is about 50 - 65 THB/month. Included in this already is a monthly garbage collection fee of 10 THB and the water works "service fee" of 15 THB.

Price for on unit (cbm) of water including the service fee and tax is about 4.7 THB. Electricity is about 3.8 THB/KWh.

Since I moved into my townhouse in March, my water bill has always been under B50. I live alone, but do my own laundry with an automatic washer (which uses a lot of water, I'm told...), and try to take daily showers.

There is no intermediary, a gal comes down the street, reads the water meter and staples the bill to the front gate. If I see her, she will take payment directly. If not, I go to tessabahn to pay.
