Infrared camera to borrow or rent

Post by mwbrown »

I'd like to use an infrared camera to go around my condo and look for heat leaks so I can minimize the impact and cut down on my cooling costs.

I've already fully weatherstripped my front door but I suspect the pot lights in the ceiling and the windows.

If anyone has an infrared camera that I could borrow or knows one available for a short rental I'd appreciate it.

We had a thermographic survey done at work some time ago, the bloke was under contract and had to be flown in. Nice camera, but very expensive. You won't find one in Thailand, unless you order one and buy it yourself.
Why don't you just make do with a handheld infrared thermometer with laser sighting? They're quite accurate and you can scan across a suspect area. Only a couple of thousand baht these days, and will run on two aa batteries...

Thanks Vincent! If someone has an infrared thermometer I'd be happy to borrow it for beer money, otherwise I'll keep my eye out for one.

FLUKE from the agent (Measuretronix) is the industry standard but expensive. Sang Chai Meter carry the not-so-well-known brands for half the price, but you will have to call for a quote.
Having said that, the local aircon company bloke showed up with one to check the installation temperature, probably your best bet for Thai whisky money...
Ask around. :)

Some claim any recent digital camera can be converted to IR, some say it's pseudo IR and that to do it for real takes a conversion service who knows what they're doing. Either way, it's possible because cameras have an IR filter built it. Google, then find a used camera and have at it.

As posted by VincentD, it is a "thermographic IR camera" that is used to detect and compare heat sources. It has nothing to do with taking a photo. In a previous life it was part of my job to do these surveys every year on electrical installations. The last contractor that I used had a "camera" that cost $80,000 USD, and there are some that cost up to $450,000 USD.

The small IR thermometer is sometimes also called a "laser thermometer" as they use a small laser for a sighting point, much like a laser pointer. For what you want to do they are more than adequate, but like everything else, you get what you pay for. From 2,500 baht up to 38,000 Baht!

Some people respond to the OP, others to posters that support their own viewpoints.

The following IR images are proof positive that measuring heat loss has nothing to do with cameras and photos:

Police use basic IR cameras when looking for 'grow houses', that is, residences rented for indoor pot growing. A house full of grow lights is easy to spot. At the other end of the spectrum (no pun intended) far more sophisticated and expensive devices are needed to detect the heat caused by electrical and mechanical problems. After using IR cameras to save homeowners energy in the US became a thing, lobbyists influenced legislation requiring high level training and equipment. That's why home energy audits are so freaking expensive.

Get the right tool for the job. As my favorite shop teacher used to say 'You don't need a micrometer to dig a single use latrine'.

Actually you can use the phone camera to check for IR(sort of). I've used it to check my aircon remote, you can actually see the IR led light up when you press the remote.
