Good Tiler... Whats a fair price?

Post by Dieter78 »

Our bathroom is getting re-tiled.

I know a guy and have seen his jobs, he is very good. Cuts nice angle joints, nice grouting and finishing. His rate is 450/sqm.

Seems fair?

Dieter78 We have just had a 29M2 conservatory floor tiled last week here in the UK. I paid a professional company to lay a liquid vinyl, self levelling screed down 2 days before, then lay the tiles, grout and clean them.
All for £130 = approx Baht 5,850, which is around Baht 200 per M2. I would suggest that the Baht 450 you are considering paying is a bit high.

The pattern of the tiles was quite complex, but the guy nailed it first time and did a great job.

I supplied the materials and just paid the labour costs.

OK, I should not compare UK/THAI prices, but your price seems a lot for Thailand.
However, if you're happy, that's all that matters. :D

Edit as I thought that you had already paid that amount per M2. :?
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

I have just received a quote @ 2.70 Bht /sq. m. It is in Bangkok and part of a new kitchen, but not part of the cabinet work.

We had another chat to our guy. I forgot to mention that price includes material, we only supply the tiles.

He is also removing items from the bathroom, washer/dryer, toilet and refitting after.

Sorry, senior moment! They have quoted 1,566 Baht for 2.70 sq. meter. Which is actually 580 Baht /sq. meter! Which I WILL be querying before the job is done!
It may well be that they have included the cost of a basic tile?

Ahh, those senior moments, I love them, they make the day go quicker, or do they!!!

If that price includes tiles that is not a bad price, bearing in mind they are supplying materials.
I would want to see the tiles first though Nerus.

Yes, I will. I have just had the same thing with wallpaper. Quoted a price to do the job without knowing what wallpaper I may prefer. And this from a place that I have used previously when she had to chase around Bangkok for some Disney pattern wallpaper that my Granddaughter wanted.

How did the room turn out with the wallpaper? I'm curious for my twin girls.

It has been up 4 or 5 years without a problem. The original wallpaper in my own Condo is now over 15 years old, now showing its age, but still hanging where it was installed. Like everything else, you get what you pay for and there is cheap stuff that will probably not last very long. It also depends on the surface type and preparation.

What did they use for paste to apply the wall paper? I have been looking for real wall paper paste for ages and no where seems to have it, Thai Watsadu, Home Pro, even the wallpaper shop on Pala U Road said to use latex glue, WTF!

I don't know as I wasn't there at the time, but I will ask her when she comes back. The expensive stuff may have been pre-pasted.
You can have the same problem with ceramic tiles, where they insist on using mortar cement, rather than the correct adhesive.

Tiler Prices
Did the tiler say what adhesive they would use? According to my tiler in Australia it should be a rubber based adhesive. All my floors in Hua Hin house have started to pop so will need to be retiled at some time. Bit difficult to organise on holiday trips.
