BB, reading this and seeing that you do not know how paint is sold/mixed these days, maybe you should consider some workers to do the job for you. Was the amount asked for painting your house really that monstrous?

I'm sure BB knows which end of a roller to hold, I just hope he didn't lose his cutting in skills....

Yes, it was (Farang Rate) monstrous. It would have eaten up best part of 2 month's pension. I know what Thai wages are, and the price was a P take.

I always try to use local labour, but I'll enjoy this little project. I can't use Thai methods mind - paint will have to be decanted to a tray before using the roller. I will be slower than a Thai, but should be able to easily complete each room in 3 days. Several days of scraping the floor will not be required after finishing.

Go for it, BB!

I painted the interior of our rented house a couple of years ago, and was thrilled when I could pick exactly the shade of colour I wanted for the walls. I needed a bit more, as I'd miscalculated the amount and went back to Home-Pro for another pot. They had a book with my previous order in (with a splodge of paint attached) and I got exactly the same shade.

Why not go for a very pale hint of blue (for coolness), or mauve (for calmness).

OK, a very embarrassing start to this project  . I asked for 'one coat white gloss'. I was sold a tin of off white water. Does one coat gloss exist in Thailand please? Or has that changed in the last 5 years also? No wonder I was impressed at the price.

Fortunately, I started in a very discreet area, just to get my hand in again. I'd have had greater effect if I'd pee'd on the surface.

I'm about to visit Boonthavorn and Thai Watsadu to see if they sell real paint.

Well, that's it. I've given up. Every gloss paint on the market that I can find needs 4 coats. I had 2 Thais with me, including Mrs BB who has seen that I'm not useless with the right materials, and she was as amazed as me when I tried to apply the stuff (can't call it paint) today. When she explained what I was looking for, it was if we'd just stepped off the tardis after travelling back in time. Such a beast has not been invented.

I opened this thread with:
I'm generally a 'don't go there' type when it comes to doing anything about the house.
4 coats? I'm out of here. It can stay un-freshened up for ever as far as I'm concerned. I've looked at a lot of paintwork done by Thais, and have wondered why it has been so poor - now I know why. Even if I invested 2 months pension into getting it done, it is rare (based on personal experience) to get a 2nd coat, let alone 3 or 4. Now that I've been reading the instructions, I'd never be happy. This is methodology I remember my father using over 50 years ago.

We have a guy that does odd jobs for us. I might get Mrs BB to offer him the job. He's not too expensive, and I do like to use him when I can to keep him onside (I always pay a little on top as well). We might be left with some additional cleaning tasks (I'm not normally permitted to clean around the house :D ), but it's better than 4 coats using little more than water.

As kids we used to paint our rooms (and the living room) every other Christmas.
Any wall paint is typically emulsion paint, you'll need one first coat to get the colour over the stuff you want to cover, and do a final second coat. Emulsion is a water-based paint.
When you tell someone here, 'gloss', it would typically mean enamel solvent-based paint which is not suitable for walls.
Use the words, 'See Nai Baan' (inside paint for house) and 'See nork Baan' (outside paint for house).
Don't get discouraged. Thai Watsadu or Boontavorn are the places to go to, not HomePro.

The gloss is for a couple of window frames, door frames, skirting board and to re-do the main mosquito door.

Thai Watsadu and Boonthavorn thought I was a time traveller from the future - no such product has been invented.

Someone has been feeding you BS ...

Self painted our town house, got the wire brush out to take off the old paint, slapped on a coat of primer, then a coat of this stuff and all was good (three years ago and it still looks new). Paint, primer and brushes cost less than 5k for the whole house (maybe it does cost ten times more in Hua Hin ... most things do  ).

Hi BB for white gloss topcoat buy Beger Supergloss. It is just like using UK paint and covers easily in one coat. Just done our place. Can buy it by the gallon in the paint shop bottom of 94 or smaller tins in Home Pro.

BB gloss painting your walls??? Am I missing something. Matt or maybe better silk emulsion is what you want. Silk is a bit more washable after you squish mossies. And if they're already painted you do not need an undercoat, just couple of coats of emulsion unless the colour is drastically different to what's already on.

And you don't ask for how many coats, that's what you do yourself, give it two and see if it's covered nicely, with no of the old colour grinning through, should be enough. And pay more attention to the corners and wall edges, do them first with a brush, then roll the wall.

I'm getting a headache. :D :D

Spot on. But buying paint is buying paint, HomePro is as good as anywhere and they do keep a proper record of what you've bought and when, trust me.
