How to pronounce Hua Hin?

Post by Artilery »

I read somewhere that Hua Hin should be pronounced Hoi Hin - where , I presume, Hoi rhymes with Joy?

Anyone know if this is correct?

Thanks,
Art

Not so. But there is a song (in Thai) about Hua Hin in which the word "hoi" is contained. As the learned readership will recognize, the word "hoi" may have a double reference. In the song it refers to the hoi (shellfish/clams) found in the waters around the Hua Hin beaches. The double meaning could best be referred to as "clam" which would be located below the lower abdomen of rent-a-ladies in the Soy Been Tabac and similar more or less shady ares of Hua Hin.

You may continue pronouncing Hua Hin in accordance with the phonetic Google translation.

An old Thai saying goes: หัวหินไม่ใด้มีแต่หอย Ask your Thai friends, I'm sure, they'll recognize this.

Without taking into account the fact that you use a rising tone on the word "hua", it should be pronounced roughly like the two words "Who Are".

I have to admit that I cringe somewhat when I hear people who've been living here for years pronouncing it "How Are" - but maybe there's some languages where "hu" makes a "how" sound?

I cringe when I hear people try to pronounce Pattaya as well as Hua Hin. Embarrassing actually.

Good, phonetic analogy. This is how my Thai wife pronounces it.

I have to admit though, she quite often gets a laugh ot of my efforts to pronounce any thai word. Whenever a latin - letter spelling is offered, like for instance "Pin Klao" (a township in Bangkok), the Thais pronounce it in ways not immediately recognizable to the western ear.

Not knowledgable in the thai alphabeth either, I suspect quite a bit gets lost when thal spelling is converted into latin letters and then we try to pronounce it :banghead:
