Thanks for the link, here is my summary of it :

The common word for "country" is ประเทศ prà-thêt
The common word for "city" is เมือง meuang, but it can be used for country as well, especially for เมืองไทย Meuang Thai

abroad ; foreign country
ต่างประเทศ tang prathet = เมืองนอก meuang nok = ต่างเมือง tang meuang

tropical country
เมืองร้อน meuang rón = ประเทศร้อน prathet ron

depending on the order of the 2 words, you will have :
นอกเมือง nôk meuang = outside of a city
เมืองนอก meuang nok = foreign country / abroad

I would say. Muang Thai (informal /speaking in general) is nick name of Pra- tet Thai.

Pra-tet Thai (ประเทศไทย) is used for formal speaking or writing.
