I disagree with that statement. My wife learnt English from me with a tremendous amount of support and coaching. The reciprocation is laughing in my face if I mispronounce something, and probably getting on the phone to share my error with her friends.

BB In your case, yes, your wife is a problem, but I think most Thai wives/partners help and encourage their partner.

That may be true, but I've seen similar to what happens to me many times. I actually think there's some truth in richard's earlier post. They love to hear the basics from a Farang, but feel threatened if we do any more.

My saving grace is that although I won't speak (unless there's no option), after living with a Thai wife for 25 years, if I listen carefully I do understand everything that's being said (both Thai and Isaan).

A classic example was up in Isaan. A woman (who I'd never seen before) came into the house and asked my wife if the size of my penis matched the size of my stomach. You can imagine the reaction when I replied. When you sit dumb, they often say a lot of bad things about us, not realising we might understand. My wife gets in early these days and warns them that I understand.

Good on you. If you understand then believe me with just a few lessons and a bit of effort you will get there.

You'll have to ask in Isaan first

Even then you won't get the same answer, where I dropped my zip and invited her take a look for herself. She didn't accept my generous offer.
