Cataracts

Post by HHTel »

Just found out that I have cataracts developing in each eye. Sometime in the future will need to have them operated on. Has anyone had a cataract operation? If so, where and what likely cost are we looking at?

I had implants in both eyes about 4 years ago. Cost me Bt 70,000 from "Wavefront" on Chan Road. Lost the doctor's card, but he got his training at New York University. I believe he did eye surgery on HRH, His Majesty's elder sister.

Rutnin Eye Clinic on Asoke probably has the best reputation in Thailand. One of my friends had implants there and recommends them highly. I have been told that occasionally they have a "2 for 1" offer.

Rutnin did HM Queen Sirikit's implants, I believe.

If you're in the vicinity of All In Hua Hin (the German deli/restaurant just behind the shopping mall - i.e. small supermarket near Satukarn Square) speak to Till who runs the place. He's just had some treatment locally and he's really pleased with the results. He had laser treatment on one eye, and has a cataract in the other - which is going to be sorted soon.

Don't know where he had it done, but it was in Hua Hin somewhere.

I think that they can be easily dealt with at not huge costs, and if you can get it done locally (professionally) more's the better.

Good luck.

Thanks VS for that. I know the place. Often have breakfast there. I'll speak with him over the next couple of days.

I know one eye doctor in Hua Hin that weekly execute cataracts operations.
Dr.Pairat Eye-Clinic between Soi 88/1 and 88/2, close to Phetchkasem Rd.
Don't know the price, but what I do know is that he's a good eye doctor.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

Sorry Richard, I don't know the cost.

When you're next in town go and see Till (he's the owner not the machine that tots up your bill!) at All-In - he often sits at the front of the restaurant. I'm sure he won't mind giving you all the info. He's a big-built, tall guy, and last time I saw him he had an eye-patch - so he's quite easy to spot, if your eyesight isn't too bad...

Yes he is. He's a lovely man, his wife (Chris) is also a delightful German lady.

They both speak almost perfect English - so no problem with the lingo.

Richard, I was scrolling through the health issues threads and noticed your cataract query. Did you have the op and how much was it?

Hi

2 weeks from now

Diagnosed here as having cataracts

Bumrungrad said 'bullshit ' you have a lens problem with your eyes ( after 8 hours of technical tests)

Know 2 people who have had the same experience

Laser treatment to replace the lenses will cost me 80K Baht

No more glasses

Will feed back asap

Ricard,
How are you , I hope your eye operation be good.
My mom saw Dr.Pairat last week with eyesight problem. We went there by my Thai and farang friends' recommendation and we did really appreciate his work. My mom was examined for 2 hrs., diagnosed cataract and mild degree of retina degeneration. She has 2 choices to manage the problem : eye-glasses for improve the vision or operation to remove the cataract. He let us make the decision and see him next month. My mon want him to do the operation, anyway I agree with you to look for second opinion to find the definite diagnosis. What is your exact diagnosis if not cataract ? Next week we can visit Bumrungrad , so please kindly recommed your eye-doc , his working hour and the price for the eye check. ( I heard that Bumrungrad is very good but expensive , my friend had cataract operation there and paid about 85K for one eye last year.)
Thanks...

Farang Chaam

My eye doc there is Ekachai Bharksuwana

Telephone for an appointment (02667 1555)

His diagnosis of me was not cataracts but damaged lenses. He went to great lengths with a model of an eye to show me the damage. He then went on to say I could select replacement lenses and showed me the options in terms of long or short sightedness.

Both eyes can be done together and full eyesight restored in 24 to 36 hours at around a total cost of 100K to 120K. In other words 50 to 60K per eye

Extensive equipment there and the refraction operation involves a computer mapping of your eyes followed with a laser gun following the mapping for correction and insertion of new lenses

Not had my op yet as I'm on Warfarin and they refuse to operate whilst you are on certain medication. In my case having had all the tests all I need to do is stop medication for 5 days, make a phone cal and get to BK

Having said that the op costs are as quoted above, the extensive tests (eight) over a period of 4 hours will cost you about 7k

If you wish to have both eyes done at once they will insist on the patient being accompanied or a one night stop over

Farqang Chaam

Hold it

Going up to BK on Thursday for a third opinion at Rutnin Eye Hospital (supposed to be amongst the top in the world)

I'll post the results asap after the visit

I understand they are considerably cheaper too

Google the name and you get a mine of information
