Post by Dr Mike »

BANGKOK HOSPITAL--HUA HIN

The Bangkok Hospital group is building and will soon open a brand new hospital in hua Hin. Construction is underway and it will start to open in stages later in 2010. Initially the Emergency Department will open and will offer 24hour a dayservice for emergencies. The Out Patient Clinics will open a few months later and the 50 bed in-patient unit in thesummer of 2011. The hospital will be closely relatedto BKK Hospital in BKK and will offer a full range of Medical services. Some 3rd level care, Open heart Surgery or Cancer treatments will continue to be offeredi n Bangkok but all primary and secondary carewill be available in HH. The 5star type of accomadotion, with each in-patient ina single room and the excellent nursing care for which we are famous will be brought to HH.
I will betalking at the Rotary Club of HH tomorrow (10th sept) and later in the year we will have an open meeting to hear from you.

I would be happy to know --What are you looking for in terms of Medical care from our new hospital??

Good emergency department and child care at a fair price would be enough for me. Also check the patient REALLY before send him back home, at San Paulo my wife was asked to go back home because she "had nothing", the next day she went to Bangkok and was admitted in emergency department at Vejtani for immediate surgery, the doctor said she would be dead by tomorrow without surgery.

Stories like this you have hundreds in that hospital, they also charge 100 bahts for paracetamol tablets that can be purchased for 10 bahts in every store in town.

Make it fair and pro please.

It will be expensive, BBK Hospital always is, everywhere. It'll basically be a 4 to 5 star hotel that happens to do health services and operations with nurses instead of waitresses, doctors instead of managers.

Basic rate of Standard room will be at least 3-4k Thai baht for 24 hours, then everything else on top.

Don't get me wrong, when it's sorted out then it'll be good but it'll be steep, as a company they have very deep pockets indeed.

However, good place to spend your insurance, if you have it.

Have recently had experience of another BBK Hospital elsewhere, good but steep.

It'll be good for the area though, needs something like that.

3-4K is not expensive for a night in the hospital... In France it's more like 30 000 to 40 000 a night.

This is a fair price for a nice hospital with real doctors and not the crappy ones that we have at Sao Paulo.

OK Johan, I said 'at least' which indicates a good chance of it being more, especially if it's somewhere like Hua Hin where there are lots of tourists and retirement types with lots of cash/insurance plus it's close proximity to Bangkok, the BBK hospital I'm quoting that figure from is not in such an area and might have to adjust its service charges in line with that.

Also comparing everything back to your home country is a habit you should try to get out of, it will help you out a lot here if you can think out of that box especially if you want to spend a lot of time living here.

Think in baht, not Euros.

Last year I had to stay overnight in Bumrungrad hospital & the cheapest room was a shared twin for about 7000b/night. I came to HH hospital & stayed in a more than adequate single room for about 1100b/night..with much better service/nurse attention throughout.
I agree HH needs a better emergency/trauma unit staffed by competant doctors & consultants.
(I only discovered the true extent of my injuries after the Insurance Co. flew me back to the UK..after HH
hospital had happily discharged me).
While on the subject of travel insurance companies...I've been trawling thru' many firms policies & now most of them state they will not pay out for private healthcare if adequate 'state' healthcare is available.
ALSO..this year it was hard to find a company that covered you to ride a motorcycle..up to 125cc or otherwise, motorcycles seemed to be omitted from most companies list of hazardous activities now.
I found one that will cover me,but need to show full UK M/C entitlement to them, and be wearing protective
clothing always..my bikes the one with a UK helmet in the basket.
(You're paying higher premiums for less + less cover I'm afraid..and its noticable now)

Firstly Dr. Mike, Welcome to the forum, forgot it was your first post.

Having had a couple of thoughts on this then one thing I'd like to see in all BBK hospitals, or any other for that matter, and that is having a defibrillator in the EMS ambulances.

It's now only about $1500 for an average spec defibrillator (Phillips etc), $3000 for an "all singing-all dancing" one.

However, I am not a medical health worker and understand that there might be more to the issue than meets the eye.

Welcome to the area Dr. Mike -

Being nearly geriatric but feeling like I could do another thirty years with the proper care I personally would like to see the following areas addressed:

1) A good Eye/Ear/Nose and Throat clinic. I have continuing problems with Adult Asthma & Chronic Rhinits to deal with and don't want to have to go all the way to BKK for what usually amounts to a quick office visit, albeit an office visit requiring a specialty.

2) State of the art diagnostic equipment, hopefully including the C/T Scanning equipment and computer diagnostic links with The main hospital in Bangkok as well as others if available.

3) Access to the latest micro surgery/spine clinics via the above so diagnostics could be performed and decisions made prior to spending time at primary care centers in Bangkok.

Yes, I do have personal reasons for no's 2 & 3 which are a very arthritic and post surgical (3) neck/cervical spine, or whatever it's called.......

4) A preventive maintenance clinic where one could have cholesterol screening/pap smears and other minor out-patient services attended to without trying to figure out which doctor or department to make an appointment with.

Best of luck with the new facility.

I'd just like to see a hospital that will admit someone in trouble whatever the circumstances, without a guarantee of payment. That's a Hippocratic oath, isn't it?

I wouldn't. If this happen you will have thousands of people every day in this hospital and we really need a good one to replace Sao Paulo.

Forgot to say. If my Thai wife came to the UK I think she'd be able to get medical care on the NHS through me. I think that's right?
Over here, the rich pay no taxes, the poor can't afford to etc etc. So, education and health are privileges, not rights.
I'll get off my commie soap box now.
The concept of a decent hospital in HH is a good one as long as it's affordable for all.
Just my view.

Affordable sure, don't expect anything free. Taking customers that can't pay isn't possible for any hospital in the world. Get an insurance that accept this hospital, for less than the UBC fee you can get the best of the hospitals in Thailand and many thai people have UBC. They also have expensives phones and great time drinking beers and whisky (not all but many of them).

Health is a priority for some people, not for all. Most of the thai people i know could afford an insurance of 20 000 bahts a year but they don't want. That would mean a lot of sacrifices in luxury items or great time going out. My sister wife and her husband are just normal people who work in public bus, she take the coins and he's the driver, they have a nice pick up, a nice flat tv and a lot of stuff in their owned town house, but they don't have an insurance for them or their childreen.

Would you give them free care in Bangkok hospital ? Sure not, i wouldn't too. They don't even wear a helmet on their owned motorbike... this is just an example, i know that many people can't really afford an insurance, but many can and they don't. I too don't have an insurance, but i'm "self insured", i prefer to save money in case of an accident. 3 persons is 60 000 bahts a year for insurance, 720 000 for 10 years, normally we wont use that much money in hospitals in 10 years unless we get a real problem that will be repaid with the savings of the next years without problems. Thai people can't do this as they will spend every penny they got.

I believe is not free, someone will pay, maybe not the customer but someone will. Maybe the governement or some associations.

But that is not what you said ie:
Taking customers that can't pay isn't possible for any hospital in the world.
UK hospitals do not turn anybody away. Yes, the treatment will be funded somehow, but not necessarily by customers that can't pay.

I'm sure what Lomu meant was treat the person now, and worry about getting paid later. Some may default, but a lot would pay. The current Hua Hin hospitals aren't interested in treating anybody unless they have a fat wallet.
