Opticians Hua Hin
Opticians Hua Hin
Looking for some help please. I am visiting BK and Hua Hin later this year and would like to advantage of the cheaper prices in Thailand compared to the UK. I will only be in BK for one night on the way out and one night on the way home, so I am looking for a good optician in Hua Hin. Is there a good optician or will I be better placed looking in BK. Thanks for your help.

The opticians are just as good here as they're in Bangkok. If your stay in HH is longer than in BKK, do it here. Here are some
Time Optic (very modern equipment), near the Hilton Hotel, not the cheapest one but very good. There are several others as well such as Charoen Optical which are good and inexpensive.

Opticians
I have just experienced some intertesting visits to opticians in Hua Hin.
I visited 2 opticians recently for a quote fort new lenses for my "Varifocals".
I was quoted 7.500Bht, but after a frown from me the price was dropped to a "special price" of 5,600bht.
I walked across the road to Charoen Optical and was given an immediate eye test and quoted 4,500bht for the same prescription. They are very helpful and couteous and would recommend them to anyone!

Eye Glasses
Thailand.
Eye Glasses.
I have purchased all of my eye glasses in Thailand for the last 20 years. Never any problems. I usually get some each trip. I tend to lose glasses or break them. Mine are single prescription. I pay anywhere between 1,500 and 2,000 Baht - total. But I avoid the fancy ones like titanium, etc.
Shop around. Some shops do not have a technician to adjust glasses. Some are made on site while others are made elsewhere. Some shops provide an eye exam - a machine one looks into. Every time I have used that machine it has matched my (opthamologists) prescription in my pocket. Some/all can "read" the prescription already on your present glasses.
And a note about fashion. I walked into one shop and asked for the cheapest frame. Oh, about 15 years ago. The frame was copper in color. An inexpensive frame not found back home. Upon getting back home people thought this frame was really expensive as they had never seen this color frame before. Cheap frames Thailand - looks real expensive back home. Go figure.
And the hinge broke on these after about 7 years of use. I went back to same shop and glasses were fixed no charge. No receipt. And I had only been in that shop once 7 years earlier to purchase the glasses. And I still have/wear those glasses.
Mine are scratch resistant plastic lenses. Never any problems with scratches. I also get/have tinted ones. Rose, blue, green and of course, clear.
Shop around and go from store to store. All prices are negotiable - at least where I shop.
I have purchased eye glasses in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phnom Penh. Phnom Penh is by far less expensive . . . but that story is for another posting.

I have purchased eye wear in severl locations in Thailand. If you shop at a place with an onsite optician you can usually get your eyes tested and have your current prescription read. I usually take my prescription with me from home. The Thai optician will verify the precription. If your prescription is more than one year out of date I recommend you have your eyes checked before you arrive or have the local optician update it for you.
As was mentioned earlier prices can vary considerably from place to place. Shop around and make sure the quoted price includes all the "extras" scratch treatment glare reduction etc. Don't be afraid to bargain.

After so many years here and so many eye tests, I'm not convinced that the prescription is correct.
I always tell them my latest prescription from the UK - admittedly that was 2 years ago - however it dosn't seem right.
Glasses are comparitively cheap here, however can anyone with a "blindness" of -6.5 in each eye point me in the right direction?

He's extremely good. I had a slight problem with something obscuring my vision (within my eye). He gave me a very thorough eye exam & immediately referred me to a Bumrungrad specialist (his old teacher).
Turned out he suspected I had a very rare form of eye cancer. After photographs & tests in Bumrungrad, it proved not to be that, but something harmless. I can't rate him enough, though, for being so thorough & efficient & having a good deal of knowledge, even about something very obscure (the incidence of this cancer was 1 in so many millions; I looked it up)
