Be careful of those mozzies here. You think you're safe in Hua Hin, away from the jungle etc. My youngest daughter has just contracted Dengue fever and she's not been outside of Hua Hin. No-one is safe.

Use those sprays and repellents especially this time of year.

I also know of a couple of people who have contracted it, 1 Danish guy and a French guy, both in Hua Hin.

Sorry if it's been covered earlier in the thread, I've not read it all but it's apparently the daytime ones that are the problem and if you see them they have a little white marking on them as well.

Mozzies don't normally bother me much, I get the odd bite but not much reaction, however when I started getting nibbled during the day recently, that's when I was worrying about them!

We (and the hospital) thought my son had contracted Dengue soon after we moved to Hua Hin. Thankfully he was later given the all clear, and it was put down to a tropical fever. However, when I was reading about it, everything was saying the source is normally contained to (from memory) a 50 yard radius. Obviously the parasite is quite common, and found all over if that's case.

Dengue fever is nasty very nasty. i lived in Singapore for over 12 years and even in a very modern city close to the city center Singapore still has many dengue cases each year. They will put up big signs at the ends of roads where there have been cases. They will also do spot checks on houses, condo's etc checking for any signs of standing water and give out heavy fines. prevention in the first place is the best protection.

I presume there are no official THAI studies on the effectiveness of mosquito repellants. In your opinion, and from what you know, What is the best mosquito repellant you can by in LOS?

The dengue mosquito is firstly URBAN and secondly a day-time biter. Its an interesting disease, there are 4 sub types and immunity to one does not give immunity to the other three. The second attack may be worse than the first which is not common in infectious diseases.

Anything with a high pecentage of DEET. OFF regular, orange can, is readily available in spray and cream form, and sometimes "Deep Woods" OFF in a green spray can. For me the orange lasts 4-6 hours, green 8 or longer. Some other over the counter products without DEET are only 2-4 hours. Pete

Thanks for your response. It would be of value if you could provide the name of the product and whether it´s available in Thailand. The fact that you saw "a nice product in Australia" does´t help much

Some articles I've read suggest that using Deet regularly over long periods of time may be as dangerous to one's health as the diseases mosquitoes carry.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I've had dengue fever, it's not good, I'll take my chance with Deet, although I do agree it can't be good for you if used often.

This fever is spreading and increasing at an alarming rate. It seems it's a big problem in BKK with teams going door to door. There's a big poster outside HH Hospital warning of standing water.

And to top it all, my son is in hospital with Dengue Fever. His blood count dropped to 25% of what it should be.

Don't be too complacent about it as it's hitting a lot of people now, There were 40,000 cases in Thailand in 2014 and 107,500 cases up to Nov 2015. That' more than 150% increase and for one in every 1,000 it's fatal.

Yes, it's over here in Rayong and the rest of the East as well. All schools both public and private have put out warnings along with the standard list of precautions to be taken. Let's hope that with cooler and dryer weather it will fade a bit. Pete

I hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery.
