Is Sao Paulo hospital better than BKK Hua Hin hospital?
I have had several problems with BKKHua Hin hospital not to mention their rip off prices -what do members think of Sao Paulo hospital or indeed any other as an alternative.I have BUPA Platinum insurance. Many thanks in anticipation.

I've been admitted there twice in my years here. Once for pneumonia (3 days) and once after a motorbike crash (10 days) and I wasn't able to fault the place.
However, there are other members who've had a torrid time there with misdiagnoses and so on.
I think it all depends on what you're condition is. Simple things like dressing wounds (although mine after the crash was pretty serious) and pumping you full of antibiotics, they can do without much problem. If the complaint is internal or more serious then - well, I'm not too sure.

A friend had a serious infected wound after a minor m'cycle accident. He askead a taxi to take him to BKK Hospital HH and the driver took him to SP. He thought that the care was excellent, the Dr spoke fluent English and explained everything to him.

A few years ago I vilified it as they misdiagnosed me twice and on one occasion refused me information for my private doctor but I have been recently albeit for minor issues but it seems to have changed and geared itself up to meet the challenge of competition.

Further to my post and the mention of overpriced medication one can refuse any hospitals medication and purchase elsewhere if available

I couldn't comment on any advanced medical problems but I used San Paulo for a simple wound dressing and series of vaccinations last year and I thought that they were really rather polite and efficient about the whole thing and I had no complaints whatsoever. I was left with the impression that the nurses there that attended to me were very professional in their work.

It is remarkable that ex-pat men with Thai wives are generally happier with the medical care in any hospital in Thailand. In China I knew a Chinese lady with nursing training and who spoke both perfect English and Chinese who you could hire to accompany you to medical appointments. A good strategy!

Well if you know of a Thai equivalent lady in the HH area, please let us know Dr Mike. For most of us, the aim is to stay as far away from Thai hospitals as possible, but if the inevitable does happen, you want to chose the best hospital in your area and hence i suppose the OP's question.Dr Mike wrote:It is remarkable that ex-pat men with Thai wives are generally happier with the medical care in any hospital in Thailand. In my own case, when first in the process of being diagnosed and then receiving initial treatment for lymphoma a few years ago, I spent a month in Sirirat Hospital in Bangkok. I really was not at all well. The medical attention was good, but the general level of nursing was such that if I hadn't had Mrs D-M sleeping next to me and tending to my personal needs on a daily basis, it would undoubtedly have been an entirely different and much more unpleasant experience. It's possible that they would have done much more had I been alone, but I can only speculate about that.Dr Mike wrote:It is remarkable that ex-pat men with Thai wives are generally happier with the medical care in any hospital in Thailand.
To a much lesser degree, the same applied to a week in Sao Paolo a few years earlier with a thrombosis in my leg.
Having said that, and without any offence whatsoever to those with Thai partners, there is only one Mrs D-M.
This is the way

One thing that impressed me about my few visits to a Thai hospital was that I didn't have to wait four hours to be attended to like I did on my last visit to a hospital in the UK.It is remarkable that ex-pat men with Thai wives are generally happier with the medical care in any hospital in Thailand.

This has happened to me at both Petcharat and Bangkok Hospital, Hua Hin this year. Both hospitals insisted that I had a Thai stay with me 24 hours a day.dtaai-maai wrote:The medical attention was good, but the general level of nursing was such that if I hadn't had Mrs D-M sleeping next to me and tending to my personal needs on a daily basis, it would undoubtedly have been an entirely different and much more unpleasant experience. While at Petcharat, Mrs BB had to nip back to Hua Hin (gone about 4 hours) - the staff were getting quite worked up about it.
I must say that I did wonder what happens to the many Farangs who do not have Thai partners. When I asked my daughter, she said that the hospital puts on an additional 'care' charge. Can anybody confirm this?

My first experience as a hospital patient in 40 years was San Paolo. An emergency appendectomy saw me left for 5 hours in extreme pain on a gurney, until the Surgeon finished his day job at Hua Hin hospital. Nobody seemed interested, except to point at the funny farang going into cardiac arrest and ensuring I could pay.dtaai-maai wrote:The medical attention was good, but the general level of nursing was such that if I hadn't had Mrs D-M sleeping next to me and tending to my personal needs on a daily basis, it would undoubtedly have been an entirely different and much more unpleasant experience. After the operation I had 4 days of misery with disinterested staff, a run-down setting, an uncomfortable plastic mattress, awful food with Pepsi, no bed baths, slow to change dressings and a bill of 84,000 baht, which would have been more, had I not insisted on being released.
I didn't really wish to burden others with my situation. That was a mistake. If there is a next time, I'll have someone around 24 x 7.
After seeing how efficient and pleasant Bumrungrad can be, San Paolo was a shock. This is private?
Never again.

I can confirm that Bangkok Hospital, Hua Hin excelled in both.MrPlum wrote:no bed baths, slow to change dressings

Had a friend who recently used BKK hospital in Hua Hin for a cataract operation. They totally screwed it up resulting in him losing vision for a month and having to go to Bangkok to have it re-done.
