Diabetes, congestve heart problems, etc

Post by migrant »

My MIL suffers from the above, and more, high blood pressure, cholesterol problems, and recently needing to have oxygen periodically (often) around the home.

She is doing OK with changing lifestyle, but she is not super motivated and at her age I don't anticipate her changing much for the better.

My wife is worried that in Thailand she will not receive the same level of care as she does here (to be honest I have not been pleased with her doctors here, but my wife and her Mom judge that)

I've followed all the various hospital threads with interest, but have more specific questions to those with experience, whether personal, or through friends and family.

Has anyone found a doctor that they are pleased with for diabetes and congestive heart problems?
Those that have to shoot insulin, how is availability, price?
How about oxygen? readily available?

My wife is good with day to day monitoring of her, but always good to keep a pro, or two, in the background!!

Thanks!!

I would suggest you contact Sargeant - he has had some excellent results using Hua Hin Hospital. I think you should PM him though, or the thread will probably end up a conspiracy theory. I am sure he will be able to help you considerably.

Migrant i have PMd you

BB the fact that you posted
I think you should PM him though, or the thread will probably end up a conspiracy theory.
speaks volumes about the person that would turn it into a conspiracy and even more volume that nothing is done to stop HIM by the mods and owner/s of this forum

To advise members to get information by PM out of fear that an unregulated troll will screw it up says categorically this forum is definitely NOT the definitive source of information any more

Hi Migrant

I can't speak for myself since I never go for any checkups  so for all I know, my sugar, cholesterol and etc could be through the roof. However, I know many Thais who have diabetes and it seems medication is readily available. Not sure what the cost is, but if you snoop around and make inquiries..........well, let's just say it can be bought at a reduced price  and yes, it is still fresh and valid.

Oxygen can also be bought at a number of pharmacies in Hua-Hin, but again, I'm not sure what the costs are.

BTW, my great aunt who spent the last 10+ years of her life living with my Mom managed to control her diabetes through diet alone despite the fact that doctors had told her otherwise. I'm not wanting to move this thread in that direction, but it's something I witnessed with my own eyes. She was so terrified of needles that she would rather have died than inject herself. As a result, she sought advice and followed a VERY VERY strict diet based on the advice she received. Personally, I would rather die than live on the diet she adopted, but I guess we all have a choice.

Like you say, your MIL is old and set in her ways so most likely not very motivated to change. With my aunt it was a matter of EXTREME fear.   .

Good luck. :thumb:

It is a shame that some very important posts have to revert to PM's because of the few people that submit negative replies to some very informative subjects.

cookie 102 you are of course quite correct so i will post what i would have posted anyway

Hello migrant
I dont know if you have read my story or seen the photos of me before and after but if you search the forum for "fighting off the selfish option" you could show your MIL.

However just a short history i had had four heart attacks weighed 112 kilos and was on 12 tablets AM 8 at midday and 13 tablets at night. I now weigh a steady 82 kilos

I then had an arrhythmia attack went to HUA HIN hospital and was treated by a young doctor Name POLPAT he is a heart specialist but is also taking into account other illnesses that may or may not effect ones condition (for instance he arranged a hernia operation for me because it was causing me stress)
His policy is to prescribe the MINIMUM amount of medication needed to treat the problem. I am now on 5 tablets AM and 6 at night.
He is very empathetic got me training and constantly gave me the encouragement to keep going.

He is the doctor at the Hua Hin Heart clinic in the center of town on the left side going from BKK to south just before the first traffic lights
he is open evenings and weekends but my advice would be go in the evening as at weekends he is full of patients from BKK that have followed him (he is that good)
He is also as far as i know the consultant cardiologist for the BKK hospital

anyway if you have more questions ask away and i wish you and your MIL all the best

Sadly there are a PAIR of individuals that have deep rooted issues with EACH OTHER so the only solution would be to banish them BOTH from the forum to prevent sensible topics being driven into the ground by their PERSONAL DISPUTES & DISAGREEMENTS, and constant bickering that we do not take action against the other member.

Now, we hope that this explanation covers all angles and :offtopic: please. Any further off topic posts will be deleted and suspensions will follow if further questioning of forum policy and moderation continues.

For both insulin and oxygen, you'll find a "medical supplies" place on your left hand side, heading north from Hua-Hin, a short distance after the traffic lights near the palace.

I've never actually bought anything there but I have looked around inside and they seem to have most things. Staff spoke English as well, and there's a "sports injuries" place just next door, maybe owned by the same family or company.
