Knee Problems
Knee Problems
I have a very painful left knee which has got progressively worse over the past few weeks and I need to get it looked at.
Has anyone else had similar problems and can recommend a good doctor or physician?
Thanks

Re: Knee Problems
Are there any other symptoms than pain? If the pain is on the back of the knee around the top of your calf muscle you should go to a hospital immediately. Could be a clot which in turn may move up to your lungs.Ropes wrote:I have a very painful left knee which has got progressively worse over the past few weeks and I need to get it looked at.

I'm not a doctor but trust me, I know. I had it myself. The treatment is injections with a blood thinner agent and possibly pills you may take the rest of your life to prevent new attacks.
Good luck.

Re: Knee Problems
I'm not a doctor either and would also suggest that you get it looked at professionally - unfortunately I can't recommend a good doctor, but if the pain is intense and in the joint of the knee, it could be gout which although very painful can be treated with anti inflammatory tablets such as dicoflenic. A simple blood test can check your uric acid level which will be high if it's gout.Lung Per wrote:Are there any other symptoms than pain? Re: Knee Problems
Got to agree with the above - I've had problems with my knee for years and need a replacement..... for one reason or another not done up to now.
HOWEVER - get to a hospital. One of the biggest dangers as Lung Per quite rightly says is a blood clot - this can easily rise to the lung, sometthing which very nearly happened to me. I am now on regular doses of Warfrin or similar to thin my blood - I find alcohol works well too!!
Also, leaving your knee without correct treatment if required will no doubt cause further damage. Something you will deeply regret later.... trust me.
Hope you seek advice in the hospital and all is OK.....

Re: Knee Problems
Bangkok hospital HH has an orthopedic surgeon who worked in the us for many years, fluent English speaker.
Re: Knee Problems
Thanks guys for the advice. I am back in Hua Hin in 10 days and will seek the required help at the Bangkok hospital.
I am hopeful it is just the knee as it clicks every time I straighten it although I also have some muscle pain which may be caused by walking differently.

Sounds like you got cartilage problems.Ropes wrote: I am hopeful it is just the knee as it clicks every time I straighten it although I also have some muscle pain which may be caused by walking differently.
Keyhole surgery will be the likely solution, hopefully that will solve it, though it sometimes takes a full op to sort it permanently.
Best of luck & i wouldn't worry to much, it's a fairly straightforward procedure & a reasonably quick recovery time.

Re: Knee Problems
Yes sounds like a meniscus tear,an MRI scan(expensive) will fix it. If you do not have insurance and have a good interpreter friend, a Thai hospital is an option.
Re: Knee Problems
We have had ok experiences with BKK Hospital in Hua Hin only for the kids, its quick and everyone speaks English but I have never heard of anyone having a good experience there...beware of rip offs there, I have heard many from the kids illness to surgery.
I know someone who had a knee operation recently and they went to Bumrungrad in Bangkok.

Re: Knee Problems
I can also thoroughly recommend Bumrungrad if your finances can stretch to it or your insurance covers the cost of treatment there. It's certainly not cheap but the best IMHO. Had it not been for this hospital and it's very thorough procedures I would not be here writing on this forum today.cozza wrote:I know someone who had a knee operation recently and they went to Bumrungrad in Bangkok.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: Knee Problems
My wife recently had knee surgery at Bumrungrad and although expensive we cannot recommend them more highly. They did an excellent job and were very professional in all aspects. Given the importance of insuring such injuries are treated correctly it is well worth the money. From memory the first consultation was not expensive and we were given a diagnosis together with recommended treatment and an estimate of cost so as to enable us to make an informed decision before we proceeded.
Re: Knee Problems
Ironically today I decided to seek medical advice for an ongoing knee problem, for which I will require a full knee replacement at some time in the future. I say in the future because my advice from UK and Australian orthopedic doctors who are knee specialists is that I should soldier on for as long as possible, because I'm 'too young' for the operation. Nice to be too young for something, when I'm fast approaching 55!
Anyhow, my point is that I went to the Hua Hin Bangkok Hospital because I was told a knee specialist from Bangkok attended there some Sunday's, unfortunately this did not seem to be the case, or maybe there was a misunderstanding, does anyone have any knowledge of this? I was also told that an injection of something was available that would help pending full surgery, any ideas as to what this might be and how to get it? However I did establish that orthopedic doctors are available every other day of the week apart from Sunday's and managed to make an appointment to see one tomorrow, Monday 23rd, unbelievable given the waiting times in the aforementioned countries, even if you're happy to pay.
Maybe you should check them out when you return to Hua Hin Ropes?

Re: Knee Problems
You are probably talking about synvisc which I was told would delay surgery/pain up to six months. I researched on my own and decided not to.mikosan wrote: I was also told that an injection of something was available that would help pending full surgery, any ideas as to what this might be and how to get it?
Like you, my doctors have told me to postpone replacement surgery (I'm 56) as long as possible. Technology is, of course improving, but I was told that after 10 years the knee will need a new replacement and, in doing, they will have to shorten your leg by 2-3 inches. If you start too early, and remain walking into your 70's and 80's you would have a severely shortened leg.
