If you really want an opinion, please PM me. My family have used both places quite extensively, but some of our experiences are not for an open forum.
Hi Big Boy,

My wife is pregnant and she is due in July. I'm try to compile all hospital reviews to make an education choice of hospital in Hua Hin (or Petchaburi) for her to give birth.
We are both Farang and hardly speak any Thai language. Based on your extensive experience in both hospitals, do you think Hua Hin government hospital is a safe option?
We both contribute to social security through our work permits, so we are keen on saving on the costs of private hospital unless strictly necessary.

help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

It would be hard for me to make a judgement on that one. I know my youngest granddaughter was born there because my daughter wanted to take full advantage of the 30 Baht scheme. However, she transferred to San Paulo (where her husband worked at the time) 8 hours later (guess who paid for that?)

Our next door neighbour had a baby at Hua Hin Hospital a couple of weeks ago, and she was in the new building, which said was very good.

I think my best advice to you would be to go to the Express Clinic, where they definitely speak English, and ask to see the facilities. The girls in the Express Clinic are very helpful.

The Thai wife of a British friend of mine there had both of their kids at Hua Hin Hospital and was very happy with the service and the price. They have an area in the "international" wing just for this purpose. I visited there after the birth and it looked like they are well set up for it.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Hua Hin Hospital Vs Bangkok Hospital

Post by Dieter78 »

We prefer Hua Hin hospital because we believe we get good service. Bangkok hospital is very close to us but we believe in relation to service offered its over-priced.

I also get acupuncture in Hua Hin hospital, very cheap, ladies speak english & I never wait more than 5 minutes.

I've just re-read my post, and think this bit needs clarifying. She had always planned it this way. The fact she transferred had nothing whatsoever to do with the treatment offered by Hua Hin Hospital. The private hospital offered more comfort, and other family members could stay in the room overnight with mum and baby.

At the time (over 10 years ago), they did not allow any visitors into the maternity ward. The first time we saw our granddaughter was when her mum brought outside of the hospital during visiting time - a concept that was totally alien to me. This practice seems to have ceased now because Mrs BB has been into the maternity ward to visit new born babies a few times in the last 4 years.

Re: Hua Hin Hospital Vs Bangkok Hospital (Petcharat?)

Thanks a bunch for the invaluable information.

Anyone has any recent experiences giving birth at Petcharat Hospital? From what I gather reading the threads, they have a solid reputation.
For a private hospital, their website is very modest, and I found them impossible to reach through the phone. Anyone has any info about maternity packages and overall quality?

When I arrive in a couple of weeks I was thinking of having a health check/mot test :) I have printed Bangkok Hospitals health check out but it is difficult to read. The vital check which is the cheapest is 2800thb and the prices go up in stages to 98000, do Hua Hin hospital do a similar check?
I had one at Bangkok Pattaya about 10 years ago and that seemed OK for the money and tests done.
Any tips most welcome.

Friends have told me that the health check at Petchaburi Hospital ( that is the second hospital heading north RHS ) is good.

2 yrs. ago I had a complete health check-up at Bangkok hospital. they had a yearly special and I think it was 12,000 baht. after that the drs. weren't great. one lied to me about his experience and screwed up the surgery and another just seemed bored, asked the same questions each time I saw her and didn't listen to the answers. the nurses, after the surgery, were efficient and rather robotic. I currently go to hua hin hospital for acupuncture. the acupuncturist doesn't speak much English but she is good at her job. the staff and nurses are humans and not on auto-pilot. the price difference between the two hospitals is huge. just to talk to a dr. at Bangkok hospital costs 800 baht and acupuncture is 350 a session. i'll be having a blood test there this week and will be able to compare hospital prices for that.

I had a health check at Sao Paolo Hospital last year and was quite impressed about the good organisation and professional advice. I had just minor things like too much cholesterine and blood sugar and was very surprised that the doctor did not want to earn money on a lot of medicine but advised me only about nutrition.
The price was considerable lower than Bangkok Hospital for the same tests.

The OP mentioned San Paulo so I thought I would mention two recent experience.
1. I had a motorbike accident and was taken to SP, I was x-Rayed and told no broken bones. I returned and complained about severe pains in my back and chest, X-Ray again oops 2 broken ribs, 2 days later X-Ray again oops 4 broken ribs. WTF. I asked to see the original X-Ray and the 4 breaks were obvious.
2. Wife has been having severe headaches and facial pains for a few weeks continuous. The doc at SP said she should see a specialist, we met the "specialist" 2 days later, he talked to her in Thai for about 10 minutes, no examination, then told me in English she has a brain tumor and needs brain surgery. WTF. I asked is there a way to confirm this, answer oh yes she can have CAT scan but this will make the tumor bigger, any other options? yes she can have special X-Ray of her brain but this is expensive. Please do the X-Ray to confirm, ok booked into SP the next day, blood sample taken, colored dye injected into wife, "Special" X-Ray done. Outcome NO Tumor, but she has high cholesterol which can lead to restrictions in blood vessels possibly leading to headaches.
Outcome do not go near San Paulo. Nurses are good for simple things like dressing changes. Our insurance company has raised the issues with SP but no satisfaction.

I have been here 10 years and I can only recall bad news about San Paulo - of course there may have been some over reactions but in general it was a big 'thumbs down"

I remember the old Hua Hin Thonburi hospital which was really the only alternative to San Paolo at the time. It was really run down, but still preferable for many people. And then there was the polyclinic, also preferable. But if those two weren't suitable, the next choice was Phetcharat hospital in Phetchaburi. I'm pretty sure very few long term residents went to San Paolo more than once if they could help it.

That'll be Petcharat Hospital. It is my hospital of choice in the area. The only reason I don't use it more regularly is the distance.

I have numerous horror stories of private health care in Hua Hin, and put my regular check ups in the hands of Hua Hin Hospital these days. They have an incentive to get patients well and moved on. It has been stated they don't have the diagnostic equipment the private hospitals have. Hua Hin Hospital is very well equipped.

Other hospitals will keep looking for more and more things potentially wrong with you to keep you on their books - a well patient doesn't keep their shareholders happy.
