Last week Mrs Chazz (Thai) went to HH Hospital for a health check re: her migraine problems. She showed me the report which listed BP, blood and urine tests and an ECG. The cost was B3000 and Mrs C assures me this price applies to farangs also.

Yesterday we returned as a doctor had recommended she had acupuncture as a follow-up treatment. This was preceded by an hour's massage which I also had. The lady who massaged me was excellent. First, she asked me if I had any specific problems/pains - I said no, I just wanted to relax.

- After 10 minutes, she told me that I usually sleep on my right-hand side: true
- Then she said I cycle a lot: true - every other day
- Finally, she said I sit at the computer frequently: true - 3 0r 4 hours a day. She recommended a lumbar cushion (like you get on aircraft).

The massage cost B150 each for one hour. I also had a herbal massage to finish. This comprised of a bag of herbs in each hand which had been heated in a steamer and then pushed/rotated into my muscles, which felt lie they were melting! (B100 for about 15 mins.) Mrs C's acupuncture was B150.

No complaints from either of us...

Hi Big Boy,

My wife is pregnant and she is due in July. I'm try to compile all hospital reviews to make an education choice of hospital in Hua Hin (or Petchaburi) for her to give birth.
We are both Farang and hardly speak any Thai language. Based on your extensive experience in both hospitals, do you think Hua Hin government hospital is a safe option?
We both contribute to social security through our work permits, so we are keen on saving on the costs of private hospital unless strictly necessary.

help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
My step daughter had her child in Hua Hin Hospital, her initial examination and admittance was into the general ward which was quite cramped and lots of people in and out all the time, we had her transferred to a private room and the service and treatment was excellent. The only additional charge we paid was for the room

Hi Chazz, was that at the main hospital or at the clinic in Soi 6? Cheers.

Yes, many Thais take advantage of the fast track system. However, if your wife goes down that route she loses all benefits e.g. she cannot use the 30 Baht scheme.

Mrs BB gets all treatment and meds absolutely free, so its worth queuing for a couple of hours in her case. One of her meds was costing me 100 Baht a day private, so just getting that tablet free every 3 months at her check-up saves me 9,000 Baht alone. She gets several meds, so the savings are considerable, and worth hanging around for up to 4 hours.

Hi HHinner,

We were at the main (yellow) skyscraper adjacent to Soi 10.

The massage and acupuncture are carried out in the same room. I couldn't direct you to to it after my one visit. Next time I go I'll pay more attention!

Bangkok hospital opinion - a few years ago I had terrible pain in my left shoulder, arm and hand for many months. BKK hospital Pattaya x-rayed and diagnosed Arteritis then on the next visit diagnosed a bone spur growth on my shoulder and recommended an operation. I took no action. BKK hospital Hua Hin did no x-ray in fact did not examine me at all and told me I need to exercise my arm more and gave me a one page brochure on exercising.
Quite some time later I was examined in Afghanistan, the doc advised I have an MRI scan and was amazed no one else has recommend this. The MRI showed trapped nerves in my neck. Further treatment followed in Dubai and now 99% sorted.

Well done both BKK hospitals

That kind of work is usually carried out in the 1st floor (2nd if American :D ) annex adjoining the yellow skyscraper - through door number 8.

^ Confused. 8 is an OPD where I attend every 3 months. It also has a double door into what it says is the health check up centre. So is that where massage and acupuncture is done? I had imagined that sort of stuff would be in the alternative medicine clinic ( a HH hospital annex) on Soi 6.

No. you're in the right place, just walk to the far end of that room. There's usually a little old lady sat at a desk there, with very little to do. She will get you sorted. I think the sign says something about alternative medicine.

[Edit] Just read the end of your post
the alternative medicine clinic ( a HH hospital annex) on Soi 6

Looks as though they may do it in 2 places.

Hello,

we must bear in mind that experiences with the same hospital tend to differ.
We cannot disqualify a hospital in general terms unless there is an overwhelming
majority of negative experiences.

It's a different matter if we notice a general lack of basic hygene. That surely does not
apply to any of the two hospitals in question.

My wife has been treated in BKK twice.
Both times in the orthopedic department:
First for constant pain in her heels,
then for a broken ankle.
Both times she was diagnosed and treated correctly and efficiently.

I have repeatedly sought treatment at the dentistry department.
The treatment has always been top notch.
The female head of dendistry is also a maxillo-facial surgeon who has
received further training at a German University Clinic.

I had a cancer scare with a persistent sore on my tongue.
The ENT specialist could diagnose it as a lesion caused by the
sharp edges of a tooth.

Then I had caught an eczema on my arm from one of our soi dogs.
The young dermatologist obviously was out of his depth. His presciption
did not work. The eczema stayed with me until my wife discovered
all-round ointment which seems to do the trick.

So if I had only consulted the dermatology department, my judgement
and opinion of the hospital would be negative.

Don't know if my contribution was worth the effort.

Have a nice weekend everyone.

Warm regards,

On the subject of hospitals I went to Prachuap hospital today and was most impressed. About three weeks ago I fell off a ladder while cutting our hedge and sprained my ankle, couldn't walk for two days but never bothered checking it out. Anyway the pain went but there was an odd looking protrusion so I thought I'd swing by for an X-ray and chat with the Doc. In about an hour I was out, X-ray done, no problem with bones in the ankle, and Docs clearance to get back up the ladder and all for the princely sum of 270 baht.

I'd be horrified to think what Bangkok Hospital would have charged for that!

You'd be more horrified to think of what they'd have found wrong with you.

I have a lot of time for public hospitals in Thailand. Yes we hear a lot of horror stories about hospitals in Thailand (I've got a few of my own). How many of those horror stories, outside of overcrowding come from public hospitals.

The last time my wife holidayed in Thailand, it was without me (6 years ago). She became very ill, and based on the fantastic reports it had been getting, I told my daughter to take her to one of Hua Hin's private hospitals. Because she was Thai, without private health insurance (she had holiday insurance), they did not want to treat her because the risk of non-payment was so high.

Before they would do anything, the doctor phoned me at about 4am UK time to confirm my wife could/would pay. All the way through, the doctor kept telling me what it would cost, just for the necessary tests - she was more concerned about the money than treating my wife.

With hindsight, I'd have moved my wife straight to Hua Hin Hospital - I openly admit that I was a hospital snob.
