About three weeks ago I fell off a ladder while cutting our hedge and sprained my ankle, couldn't walk for two days but never bothered checking it out. Anyway the pain went but there was an odd looking protrusion so I thought I'd swing by for an X-ray and chat with the Doc. In about an hour I was out, X-ray done, no problem with bones in the ankle, and Docs clearance to get back up the ladder and all for the princely sum of 270 baht.

I'd be horrified to think what Bangkok Hospital would have charged for that!
I understand from other posts on this thread, that HH Hospital has a VIP service with English speaking staff to smooth the way for us non Thai speaking farangs, does Prachuap Hospital have anything similar? T&R

Not that I know of it was my first time there, I just went in and registered went round the corner to another dept where a nurse asked what was wrong, was then sent to the radiology dept in the next building, had the x-ray, and was back to wait for the doctor's examination a short 15 minute wait there. There were a few people there but certainly not crowded, a couple of staff could speak English but it is not widely used in Prachuap.

Hello,

had to consult Bangkok Hospital Dentistry for the umpteenth time.
Treatment as always top notch! :thumb:

First visit to the Heart Centre. My blood-pressure no longer responded
to my medication.
Knowledgable cardiologist detected irregular heart-beat which turned out
to be within the norm in ec. :D
Prescribed more effective, up-to-date medications for my high blood pressure. :thumb:

Again completely satisfied. :thumb:

Hello,

the two new, up-to-date medications prescribed for my high blood pressure
worked wonders! :thumb:

Last week my old medication had suddenly failed to control my blood pressure,
shooting up even when I took an additional 2nd and even 3rd pill.

Warm regards,

If you really want an opinion, please PM me. My family have used both places quite extensively, but some of our experiences are not for an open forum.
Hi Big Boy,

My wife is pregnant and she is due in July. I'm try to compile all hospital reviews to make an education choice of hospital in Hua Hin (or Petchaburi) for her to give birth.
We are both Farang and hardly speak any Thai language. Based on your extensive experience in both hospitals, do you think Hua Hin government hospital is a safe option?
We both contribute to social security through our work permits, so we are keen on saving on the costs of private hospital unless strictly necessary.

help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I have no idea what childbirth costs at Hua-Hin hospital, but at Petcherat hospital in Petchburi it cost my wife and I THB 24,000 for caesarian (spelling?) birth with a private room. The price covered all costs. Nice room with a large sofa so you can spend the night/nights there with your missus; private balcony, along with fridge and tea & coffee making facilities. Mrs Takiap had all 3 of our kids there and was always seen to by the same doctor who very professional and speaks good English. Our first two kids both decided they wanted to enter the world at crazy times during the night and the doctor showed up within minutes of getting a call.

All in all, I found the staff there to be very friendly and very professional, to the point where it is now my first choice should I need treatment at some point.

I also only have good things to say about Hua-Hin Hospital, but being a government hospital, it is probably a good idea to consider getting a private room for your missus.

I've never had anything to do with Bangkok Hospital so I cannot comment.

San Paulo.............Well, let's just say they were more interested in the fact that my wife has a Farang husband, even after I explained that it was not I who was about to give birth. Also, and I know it might not be a big deal for some, but I wasn't impressed being seen to by a doctor wearing dirty trainers. Of course, this was years ago so things might well have changed.

of the 5 drs. I have seen at Bangkok hospital 4 were incompetent, one of them botched my surgery and afterward I found out that he'd lied to me about his experience. another one suggested a surgery that I didn't need and later said that it wasn't his field of expertise, a third asked me the same questions every time I saw her and paid no attention to my answers, the forth bungled my eye exam, wrote the wrong prescription causing me to have two pairs of lens made and when I confronted him he went into his medical double talk routine and wouldn't take any responsibility for his mistake. I neither like, trust nor believe doctors especially at Bangkok hospital. i'll stick with the govt. hospital.

Many years ago I had hemorrhoid surgery at Petcherat hospital staying overnight. Total cost was 55,000 Baht. Bangkok Hospital quoted 70-90,000 baht for the same procedure at that time (4 years ago). Very pleased with all aspects of the care at Petcherat hospital.

In 2015 december I had accident , I broke my leg in HH. :( I was taken to Bangkok Hospital .
I had surgery and placed titanium implant. 4 days in hospital cost travel insurance almost 300000 baht :)
Crazy expensive I think. Service very good , but I heard from Thai friends BH always overprice farangs.

I had severe chest, arm and jaw pain a few times, thought it might be too much drinking. Got worse one morning, drove to San Paulo Hospital and told the receptionist I had chest pain, put me in a wheelchair and into emergency, ECG and other examinations, up to intensive care for two days to settle me down with tablets, Dr Pullpat the cardiologist for all Hua Hin hospitals said I had three blockages, Off to Hua Hin Hospital in an ambulance sirens and lights blaring, into operating theatre 2 stents inserted in around 2 hours. Overnight at Hua Hin Coranary Unit, then another two nights in San Paulo. 467,000 baht total. Fantastic service from all hospitals especially San Paulo as they have an international doctor named Dr Thomas who checks up to see if you are Ok and explains what is being done and why. Luckily I have travel insurance. Gave them my insurance papers and they did everything after that and then my insurance company kept in contact with me all the way till I was able to leave hospital. What I have now learnt is never travel without insurance.

^ That is certainly a good idea only now you have a preexisting condition and you might now find it hard to get the cover you need. Indeed, you may be told that you are covered but claims may have another idea.

Cheers

With having previous experience I will give you my 10p worth. :)
4 years ago I had serious problems with my right leg when on holiday in HH, it turned out to be DVT, either from the flight from the UK or combined with my hip replacement 8 months earlier. I had to go to BH for 10 consecutive days and the final bill was around 35000thb.
On my return home I was put on Warfarin and after 2 or 3 months the leg ulcers healed OK. Fortunately I had insurance which paid most of the bill.
Latterly I took out the Thailand Travel Insurance because UK quotes were too high, but I have now reached 70 so I am no longer eligible.
For my trip in November, I declared pre-existing (Hypertension and Anti Coagulants) but was able to get 30 days cover for around £50 with Just Travel insurers (I think).

When here in November, I went for a pee about 3am and only trod on a 9" long centipede which was in the hong nam. It fetched blood and was soon very very painful and I realised I had to get to hospital ASAP. I managed to get a Tuk Tuk to HH Hospital, a wheelchair was brought out to get me to A&E. After looking at Google images on the recptions PC I was able to show them it was a Centipede which was the culprit. I was put on a trolley, given 3 or 4 injections plus an ice pack on my foot where the problem was.
I remained in A&E for about 6 hours, having more pain killers and being sick but eventually the excruciating pain reduced.
I then went to the Pharmacy where I was given Anti-Biotics, and 2 lots of pain killers, then I had to pay up, just less than 1000 thb yes, less than 1000 thb. For such a small amount I never bothered contacting my insurers.

I have had various experiences with nearly every hospital in the area. For those things I consider non-threatening I've gone to Petcharat Hospital, Hua Hin Hospital and Cha Am Hospital. I've used Bangkok Hospital and Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok as well.

For two major back surgeries, one in 2012 and one last May, and this week for what may end up being some significant heart work I have gone to Bangkok Hospital. For my first back surgery (done in Bangkok) I paid about 400,000 baht and for the second 350,000 baht (done in Hua Hin's excellent venue). Mind you, that is in total....you don't get fifteen bills for this and that doctor and lab and hospital. One visit, one bill. Could it be any easier?

The quality of care in every hospital has been first rate. The expense in all cases has been reasonable. Think about this: within 45 minutes of our home in Cha Am we have the opportunity to use more than half a dozen excellent medical facilities. You receive care, for the most part, on the very same day you go to the hospital......for my two back surgeries I waited less than a week from initial diagnosis to surgery. This Wednesday I went to Bangkok Hospital for what was either problems with heat exhaustion or maybe a oncoming heart attack. I've had lab work, xrays, an echo-cardiagram stress test (hope I got that one right) and seen two doctors for less than 13,000 baht. SUNDAY, that's right, Sunday, I have an appointment to see a heart specialist coming from Bangkok who will determine our final course of action.

Thailand gets an A+ from me for medical care.

Thailand gets a Z- from me, they may have some good doctors but they are few and far between and they have no GPs you virtually always have to go to emergency in a hospital. The rest of the doctors are snake oil salesmen/quacks who know nothing, I would suggest you read this entire thread before making decisions.
