URGENT: Medication I need to keep walking is not available in Thailand

Post by RCer »

I need to head back to the stastes. I have the $ for my ticket but not enough for the missus. Anyone have some flier miles they'd be willing to donate to a good cause.

The med in question is oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Guam is a US territory. Can you get it there?

Probably a question that you've already explored, but is there an alternative available in Thailand?

I ask because my wife came to Thailand regularly taking a prescription tablet (completely different illness), and I was frantic because I couldn't get it here. A popular hospital prescribed what they considered an alternative, which made her really ill. I took her to Petcharat Hospital who thankfully admitted that they were not good enough to help, but put us in touch immediately with a specialist who could - even better, he had a clinic in Petchaburi that day.

He took my wife off the wrong tablets immediately, and replaced them with an alternative to her original medication, and she was back to herself in 2 days.

Basically, illness is not peculiar to particular countries, its the treatment. There are plenty of sick people in Thailand, who are being treated daily - it might be different treatment, but there are a lot of old people around.

OK, I thought you would have tried. In my wife's case, the Thai med was far more advanced than what she'd be taking in the UK.

It's a controlled drug so likely can't be shipped anyway. As an opioid used for pain relief one of the unfortunate side effects is dependency unrelated to the underlying condition. The Thai authorities may lump it in with other narcotics and it's likely banned due to its frequent abuse. Either find a substitute analgesic, try and obtain it illegally or leave Thailand if you really need it.

Not helpful, I'm sure, but there aren't many other options I can see.

I have just read a report written by another expat in Thailand who tried to get the drugs you mentioned. He wasn't able to, but eventually, a doctor at Bumingrad (spelling?) prescribed a fentanyl patch.

Apparently the patch worked just as well, if not better, and one patch lasts for three days. On the downside, he said he can't recall the price, but that he remembers it being rather expensive.

Not sure if this is of any help to you, but maybe worth looking into.

Fly to Saipan or Guam via Manila. Both are US territories and have medical facilities staffed by US doctors. All medications available in the US are available there. Also, if you happen to have Medicare, it is valid on both Guam and Saipan.

That's a big problem. You may have to fly out to the U.S. or some other country every six months. I had a similar issue when I moved there with a chronic back problem that caused debilitating spasms in my lower back. In the U.S. I had a prescription for Soma, which worked to control the spasms but considered a narcotic in Thailand so it was not available there.

I was able to find Valium at one place in Hua Hin which was not as effective. I ended up ordering Soma from an Indian pharmacy who sent it in flat bubble packs in a plain brown envelope with hand written address so that it just looked like personal mail. I did that three times (200 tablets each time) to get me through the ten years there.... don't know what would have happened if I had been caught importing them in that quantity though.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

It became effective on September 29, 2009. Kratom is used for very severe pain, such as the pain that results from car accidents and invasive surgeries. Used in Southeast Asia for millennia, this natural herb for pain is from the same plant family as coffee. It is so effective that it could even replace oxycodone (Oxycontin) and hydrocodone (Vicodin).

In Thailand, fresh leaves are chewed for mild sedative effects. Other naturalists have crushed dried leaves to create a powder to be brewed in tea, or simply added the kratom powder to water for pain-killing effects. A paste can also be made from evaporating kratom from a previously-made tea. Two ounces of crushed leaves per one quart of water is sufficient to make a pain-killing tea. Honey can be added as well for taste (and benefits).
