Hi made_in_chiangmai! I am not in Hua Hin presently, and this actually has nothing to do with answering your question - so apologies for that - but I was wondering what the price of houses were in your neighbourhood? Could you possibly give me a general overview as to the market, what's available, and cost?

Hi,thanks for your Hi! and I'm glad to give you some info.I'd get straight to the point as the general overview :Chiangmai is still good for long term investment, price of land relatively very reasonable for other currency than the local Thai Baht.Price per Sqw.would start from 1,000-25,500 B.depend on where you want to be for example in Land and House Park (development)where we're living now minimum for a first home buyer small family 2-3 bedrooms house start from 2.5MB.
Each compound has different facilities for mine is a 104Sqw. plot 5 bedrooms cost 5.5MB.
There are alot available around here , price around B.5,500/Sqw.within the 10 Kms.from town close to ring road links to the airport .It is charming cultural place and Lanna people(Khon Muang) here are so service-oriented.Their wish to please people is extremly positive.I'd be happy to give you more info.about Chiangmai.cheers.venika

Howdy! Thanks for the info, Made_In_Chiangmai! Sorry, I can't help you with your opening question, but I'm sure lots of good folks on this forum will provide everything you need to know. Chiangmai is high on my list of possible retirement locales! Have been there once and really liked the lush jungle, mountains and the people.

Off and on since 1970 LOL. Yes, the Sugar Hut is still there and like you, I stayed there first shortly after they opened in '86 when the prices were as you mentioned. They are now anywhere between 4,000-8,000++. Up to round 35 bungalows now, 3 swimming pools, jogging track through the jungle and much more. A very pleasant place to escape 'pattaya'. The owner Dr, Panya owns Pattaya International hospital. His brother is an ex-senator (Mr. Condom) and owns Cabbages & Condoms resort. The both of them just recently bought the Rayong Resort on the peninsula overlooking Koh Samat. PIC is still there and the Jazz is still there. Moonlite on Sea is still there, in the same place but tough to get to now as massive hotel and condo construction going on in that part of Naklua. Pattaya is Pattaya, not a good place to raise kids, especially teenagers. You can find anything you want, good or bad. The only plus to me is that we can find any kind of foreign food, clothing etc., that one could wish for. Very similar to being in Bangkok these days. If you haven't been here for awhile, you won't recognize the place. Pete

PS: What you remember as 1 bedroom bungalows at the Sugar Hut have all had living rooms built onto them now. Elevated walkway from the sleeping bungalow over to the living room, equipped with large sofas, big screen TV, stereo system, DVD. Luxury in the jungle!!

Thanks..for all update info.Yes,Chiangmai is a good place to raise the kids..but you can find anything you want anywhere in the world good or bad anyway..teenagers are teenagers ,being a parents todays you've gotta be in a mode of Emotionally Intelligent Parenting. It is not so easy.It is the most challenging job being a parent.

We seem can't get away from those luxury items nowadays. That's why once a week I need to be in a little primitive rustic house in my own jungle..I have created my own Sugar Hut..sanctuary in Chiangmai..and have my Live Jazz Music play by my friends at the Gallery Bar by the Ping River. But to make big money in Chiangmai it's hard after I finished with all Resort/Spa job.. the current projects are on pending after the 9/ 19 millitary coup..that's why I have to look for other options as all my kids soon will have to go to uni/college at about the same time. Cheers.Venika
