UFC: Bought for $2 million, sold for $4 billion

Post by Homer »

In the mid-late 2000s, a rumor said the owners of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship, a mixed martial arts promotion company) turned down a $1 billion offer for the company. Most thought that wasn't believable. There was no way anyone would offer that much money. The owners believed, because today they announced the sale for $4 billion.

A pair of brothers bought the copyright to the UFC name and it's collection of videos for $2 million in 2001. Many state commissions regulating martial arts had banned the UFC. The original owners had some success in getting states to accept the UFC under a new set of fighting rules. For the first time in years, things looked good for the UFC - so they sold it. I wonder what they're thinking today.

No doubt they are tough guys, but, every fight seems to end up with them rolling around the floor like a schoolboy playground scrap.

At one time that was true, which is why I and many others stopped watching. Now, few make it to the UFC without both superb take down defense and the ability to quickly get out of one - or reverse it. Result is the early parts of the fights are kinda boring as they feel each other out with jabs and kicks. Sure, there are still take downs, most often of a fighter who has taken enough damage to slow him down. It also seems the referees now are much quicker to order the fighters to stand up if the one one top after the take down isn't using it to score points.
