5 factors to consider when buying a Pool Table

5 factors to consider when buying a Pool Table

1. The Slate
There is no substitute for a pool table made with slate. Common substitutes include plywood, fiberboard, slatex, permaslate, slatron, slatine and honeycomb, but none of these alternatives offer the smooth experience and accuracy of slate.
In Thailand in general, tables that are attractive in prices are made of a granite bed which are not as strong as slate and will break / bend easily. Sometimes granite comes with a surprise as each piece are not the same thickness result...table is not level. Make sure that the table you are getting has a slate bed !

2. Legs
The cabinet of a pool table holds 90% of the overall weight, which means this amount must be supported by strong legs. When players take shots, lean or sit against the pool table it adds even more stress. The quality of the wood is crucial, what you are looking for is Solid Wood like Oak, cheaper alternatives would be MDF, Plywood and with time will deteriorate and affect the leveling of the table to a point of no return.

3. The Frame
The slate of a pool table is only as good as the wood frame, since a lack of support can cause the slate to sag, crack and become uneven. A high-quality pool table will offer slate that has been framed with wood glued to the bottom, along with cross beams that add support.

4. Cushions
The cushions of a pool table are normally made from either synthetic materials or natural gum. Natural gum cushions such as K-66 are recommended over synthetic materials as they will provide a predictable bounce that will last as long as you own the table. The best cushions on the market are produced by Artemis.

5.Cloth
There are two types of fabric processes that are used to create pool table cloth and they produce very different outcomes that have an impact on the way the cloth will play : Worsted & Woolen.
Worsted cloths contain a mix of wool and nylon, the manufacturing process leaves no discernible nap on the cloth so it is not directional, and as a result will play faster.
Woollen cloths have a clear and discernible nap that is directionally arranged and as a result will play slower than worsted cloth. Due to the wool content and depending on the environment, they will absorb humidity and play slower overtime which is why in Thailand worsted cloth is recommended.
The best and most durable cloths on the market are produced by Simonis, it is also the official cloth for most of the major professional tournaments.

Hope you guys enjoyed the reading, let me know if you have further questions.
