Hua Hin bars of old
Never seemed to be any problem when Limelight was Taxi jacks and Lollitas was Willos place, used to be some rich undesirables playing guitar down closer to Friendly bar,The only entertainment we ever got was Kieran getting thumped by his missus or Willo having a major altercation with the dragon On.How times change

That was my first memories of Hua Hin. I knew there was a guest house there but I did not remember the name. There was a laundry in the alley to the right (back to the Hilton or whatever it was called then) and then there were a couple of bars in the small soi that lead up to Bintabaht. I know Jailhouse was one and I think the other one at the other end must have been U-Turn. Nung's was there as well I think. Fairway's was a French restaurant that was never open.Digger wrote:Never seemed to be any problem when Limelight was Taxi jacks and Lollitas was Willos place, used to be some rich undesirables playing guitar down closer to Friendly bar,The only entertainment we ever got was Kieran getting thumped by his missus or Willo having a major altercation with the dragon On.How times change
What I do remember though is that it was a quiet soi. I never saw a car or truck down there. Just the odd motorcycle. In fact I did not see any 40+ year old farangs behaving like 18 year olds with their first car, at all.
Yes, things have changed. That's why I got out.

Your Bar memory is right Guess - U Turn, Jailhouse and Nungs. But the rich guitar pickers remembered by Digger were a different crowd to the ones who hung out nearer to Taxi Jacks, who could be a bit intimidating.

You really should keep those opinions private. Everybody has somebody that doesn't like them.Bella wrote:...................I know family's here turn a blind eye when one of their Kin works...............
As for kin and family business in Thailand. Let me explain. In an environment like that two ladies with a generation gap between them will say they are mother and daughter even if they come from completely different part of Thailand. When they are the same generation they are sisters. This, of course is not in every case but with long term female relationships it is very common especially with ladies who are away from home.
Anyway this is what I really opened this thread for:
I have got hold of an old blank map of Hua Hin and want to create it as it would have been in 1987 - 1997. maybe two maps. I need fairly accurate information with exact location and dates. To say something like "where the Blue Angel is now" is fine and much better than "50 metres from Binthabaht in some street near a bar that used to be called ...,blah blah blah."Digger wrote:Never seemed to be any problem when Limelight was Taxi jacks and Lollitas was Willos place, used to be some rich undesirables playing guitar down closer to Friendly bar,The only entertainment we ever got was Kieran getting thumped by his missus or Willo having a major altercation with the dragon On.How times change
So Lomu, Mags, Digger, Eddy, buksida, BB, JW, Sargeant and Co. Get yer memory cells working and give me some clues.
Hopefully the end result can be published on this site if I can resolve a copyright issue.
BTW is it true that Peter Willo is back in Blighty.

Flippin good idea Guess! It could turn into a lifetimes work mapping all the changes in HH, but will help if poss.
Arrived there fairly recently mind - in 99, but can make a start for you on the Kanjanomai area then. Maybe best to pm or it will get a bit tedious for others.
Also you might try the Observer, which now goes back into the mists of time, but has a full set of back issues and has (as far as I remember) always carried a map.
Mind you, on second thoughts, this kind of project would seem to entail a good oldfashioned walkabout, which would of course not become at all rowdy or influenced by alcohol.

Remember from mid or late 90´s there was Roma Bar (temple side of the Hua Hin Guest House and Tulip were U-Turn is now. The corner were Red Bar and the places on it´s both sides were just one big bar but can´t remember its name. Linda Bar was at the outskirts of the town, opposite from the Sofitel. Berny had his 19th hole on Bintabaht and Billy had his guest house there (I think). My first visit was in 1990 but I stayed only one night (at All Nations) and only went to the bars which were where Hilton is now. Wads a regular visitor between 1995-2002 but can´t remember too many of the names. Anyway we used to call Soi Bintabaht "Soi Joy".

Re: Bar Wars or Car Parking Wars
OK so much of 1999 will be relevant for the 1997 map. Email is better than PM ' I can attach the map for comment. I have an address for buksida, Billy and BG but the one for you is defunct now I think.margaretcarnes wrote:............fairly recently mind - in 99, but can make a start for you on the Kanjanomai area then. Is the Kanjanomai area the narrow soi off Poolsuk or the Petchakasem Soi 41 junction?
I can't post the map until I am clear on the copyright situation but I can email it OK.
I'll leave the walkabout to you and Lomu and anyone else that wishes to join in. Nung (Nung Bar), Ang (Philip & Ang), Canadian Jim (Coconuts 2), Hansi??? (Jailhouse) and Craig (U-Turn) might be be good sources of information.
Lomu will keep make the alcohol consumption is kept to a reasonable level.
All I have so far for sure is the Hilton which changed names in ????
and the Railway which became the Sofitel in ????
and
Nung Bar opened ????
Old U-Turn opened ??? moved to Bintabaht 2000 - 2001 I think.
Rainbow opened ????
Old Jailhouse opened ??? moved 2003.
All Nations opened ????
Taxi Jacks/Limelight opened ???? Changed names ????
I have locations for those above and Willo's but not opening and closing dates.
Billy's, Bernies, Octopus's and Coconuts all had previous locations but I don't know where exactly.
Where was Hare & Hounds?
When did Jungle Juice open?
The 1987 may prove too difficult so I think I will make a start on 1997 when the Observer was already on the go.
If anybody can answer any of those I think it should be in a new thread.

Moja, the Royal Garden Resort was in Pattaya, sold to the Marriott chain. Did HH have one also? Petemoja wrote:When we first came here in the late 1980s the Railway Hotel had already become the Sofitel, we stayed in the only other large hotel in town which was The Royal Garden Resort - now the Marriot.
The Hilton was in the middle of its change when we were here in late 2001

Yes HH most certainly had a Royal Garden Resort in the late 80's there was also the Royal Garden Village owned by the same company opened whilst we were here - not 100% sure which hotel that is now but it was out towards Cha'am. Back then it was in the middle of nowhere but have a feeling it was somewhere around where Index is now or maybe slightly further out.
Will see if I can find some photos!
