How can you possibly say that given some of the events of the last month or so!! I'm sure the friends and family of the poor man who was killed in his home by a probable junky don't think that.

Hua Hin IS generally a safe place BUT like anywhere in the world you will have the few bad guys looking for their next fix, drunks looking for a fight or just not nice people. The way you act outside towards others is the main part of staying safe, but even that won't protect you always. Stay safe anyways.
If it's within arms reach, there's nothing to worry about!!

I'm not sure if that's true for London anymore on a per capita basis; I would say that the murder rate for Hua Hin would be quite a bit higher.

I think it's fair to say that it is a bit more unsafe in London (well certain parts anyway) than Hua Hin. Murder in Hua Hin equals big news. Murders in London are not all reported in great detail in newspapers anymore.

I had a quick look at the statistics and there were about 130 murders in London last year for a population of getting on for 8,000,000.
Seeing as that is roughly 100 times bigger than Hua Hins population of 85,000, it seems to me that Hua Hin would need to have something less than 1.5 murders a year to be safer on a per capita basis.
The Thai police don't give out much in the way of statistics, but I wouldn't be surprised if the actual murder rate was at least ten times that.
(I did that calculation very quickly, so if anyone else has any better figures, go ahead and post them!)

Correct, there is so much here that goes unreported because it would be bad news for the town, or a business, or a high-profile person, etc etc.

(Steve G) Altough one can't argue with the general stats as you have mentioned you should put it in a more central context. London is a big place so if you were to say, for instance, how many murders took place in one borough, lets say brixton, then what would be the percetange then??.
Certain parts of London are very safe but some parts you would most definitly keep well clear of.

are you equating HH with Brixton then ? I dont think that many people would come here or buy here if they had known that was area they were buying/living in ! IMHO i think most people were hoping it was going to be a bit quieter than that !

Maybe you should choose the borough or town you think that HH should most closely resemble, and then we can look at the stats for that and then compare, rather than finding one of the worst to compare against.

I am not comparing Hua Hin to anything I am just suggesting that there are many ways to compiling stats.
Sorry but I cant come up with anywhere in England that one could compare to Hua Hin
And yes I much prefer to live in Hua Hin as opposed to Brixton but I would presume that there are many people living in Brixton who would prefer it there rather than Hua Hin.

All of the above brings to memory one of my first entries in this forum - where to buy a gun to protect oneself and one's family from hoodlums and scum.

The last three or more murders that have happened in this general area haven't they all had some sort of family or relationship connection, if that is the case is it fair to compare with stats of other places.
I feel very safe in Hua Hin but will always apply a degree of street sense late at night.

And I think a lot of those developers are from Brixton (or Sheffield)!
