Don't be so sure. My mother objected simply to having to sit on a stool next to a bar in the UK! "I am not accustomed to propping up bars...".

Mine is pretty much the same! Pubs yes - propping up bars - a no no. But she visited HH when she was only 79 and was happy enough to see life in the raw (minus the bar stools of course.)

As already mentioned - Railway Tav would be one of my choices, and is good for watching the world go by - as is Mai Tai of course. But I'd also throw in JailHouse on Chomsin, and Billys Bar.

I agree that mai tai is great for people watching and its child freindly too, often with live music. Not people watching, then El Murphys, Billys, O'reilys and Johnny Walker all good pubs and not at all girlie.

You could try the Monsoon Bar. If you walk from the Hilton down towards where all the wharfe cafes are you will come across it.
It is a bit more upmarket than most bars around there and is a nice place to spend a couple of hours. The food is very good there and they also have a good cocktail list as well.

A pal of mine owns a bar in Sodom-by-the-Sea across the Gulf.
His mum and dad came to visit from London and were having a pint or two in his bar.
After a while his mum asked, "Son you don't serve food here, why do you have so many waitresses?"
She wasn't being cheeky and my mate was totally flummoxed.

Even though they all realized what's what, they also realized and appreciated the very different experience. Honestly, they all had a great time. I certainly hope I'm not treated in any special kind of way when I'm old. Just because you're getting on, doesn't mean you've lost your sense of humor. I say take her to all types of places and give her a memory to cherish, or at least one she won't forget

I agree. Seeing the nightlife at least once can be fascinating. Millions of tourists do it every year. Then it's "Ok. I've ticked that box, what's next?"

What about the resorts? Are they worth spending an evening in a nice setting?

IME older folks are a lot less judgemental and disapproving than the 30-somethings who are still in thrall to PC nonsense. No danger in taking them down Binthabhat. Take 'em to resorts for a drink or a meal, they can enjoy the setting without being stung 2000+ for a room.

While I aggree with that general comment, I don't know if it is PC. I was once in Amsterdam talking to a guy who was trying to get punters into a 'live' show. This was maybe 15 years ago. I was curious, as one is , about their clientele and he said mostly couples. A bit amazed I asked him to explain, and he said with most couples the blokes are (or feign) embarrased for their wives, expecting them to be upset to outraged. He worked on the wives who, it turns out, were ususally curious and would end up dragging the husbands in with comments of "no, it's OK honey - I don't mind".

Spot on Johnny - I took my Mum round Patpong 1 and she didn't bat an eyelid. She was in the land army in the war and probably bonking around in haystacks before meeting my Dad (who was married to A.N Other at the time!)
We shouldn't wrap them in rose tinted specs and cotton wool. And if we did - wouldn't it just to be to save OUR embarrassment?
