Hua Hin seems to be changing - for the worse

I always enjoyed the bars in HH and never encountered any trouble, but then I knew which areas to avoid and I was always home early.
Agree with KD, I drank it that area a fair bit when i first came over, and there was too much trouble then as Hua Hin was v. busy then and that area was laid out differently with most people jammed inside the bars bumping into each other. Now it's quieter there in general, and half the people sitting outside the bars, it's miles better imho.

For the past 8 months or so, I've been going there 2-3 times a week, until it's time for my son's toast and apart from some close calls that got defused by Thai male workers (believe it or not), I have honestly only seen one real fight. Maybe I'm just unlucky, I don't know, but it has been crowded round there, like 50% more people from maybe Christmas on, so doesn't really surprised me that DaveT could have witnessed two.

The area was brought up in another thread the other week and I wrote:
Super Tw@t wrote:As SteveG mentions, the 'karaoke' area is open 'til 6am. It's changed drastically round there now imo, now that a couple of them have had a make-over, glass fronted, air-con, DJ (kid with Now Dance 95 cd), and lots of seating outside, feels a bit like a food court
And the whole atmosphere's better round there now, not all crowded in small bars with problems cos someone stood on someone's flip-flops, plus there's 4 or 5 sensible owners & security who actually want to keep the peace. Lot brighter and smarter, plus a dedicated Bintaburger who stays the course. SJ

As it's the only all-night drinking area in Hua Hin/Cha Am, with 12 bars all welded together, you would expect to see problems anywhere in the world in these types of places, whether or not you had witnessed it previously. But I don't really get how this, or the grumpiness levels of hookers during the quietest spell of their careers, is a meaningful reflection on a town overall, there are plenty of other negatives, more indicative imo.

Think you were just unlucky this time DaveT, it's that sort of place where it could produce problems 3 nights on the trot, then nothing for the next 3 months. It's very unpredictable, but don't let it, or the idiots in it, stop you from coming back.
And about high season, I think yes it is worse then as goes from half empty there, to quite crowded due it's relatively small size

Thanks SJ.

It won't put me off coming back, I have too many good friends in HH now, farang and Thai.

I won't go back to that area again in a hurry though. The Thai friend who I was drinking with that night felt bad about the situation and typically Thai felt some kind of responsibility. I told him not to worry, this kind of thing happens everywhere in the world, it's just disappointing it's now started in HH. This guy has many Thai friends and is known in many other late night bars away from the tourist areas, so we ended up going to some of them on his motorbike after this incident on my remaining nights. Was really good and got to meet some of his Thai mates in what were 99% Thai only bars, a little out of the centre.

Only downside is zooming back to my hotel on the back of his motorbike at 5 am the worse for wear!! One morning got back at 7 am, straight into breakfast then bed for a few hours!!

Actually it's not the only place open all night! There are some great relaxed places for those that want things more laid back.
pm me! I don't want to spoil them by making them public ;-)

Maybe HH is looking toward Patters for inspiration and hoping to beat them to it by the proposed/rumoured redevelopment of Bintabahn - but tourists have to go somewhere for a bevvy.
If the Bernie Bazaar area DOES go (again - rumoured for years - and all it gets is flash new bars) where is left for town centre drinkers?
Margaret, have you been there lately?
You can see the spread up the sois from 2nd road to Buakhow which is now lined with bars, go-gos and guesthouses pretty well all the way from Pattaya Klang well past soi LengKee.
Yes I know Johnny but the master plan was to also clear the bars away from the Beach/2nd Road area!

What, another area of several bars together that's open until 6am? where, where, please tell cos I can't find. I know the area along the train tracks is quite late, but shuts about 3am doesn't it, and 99% Thais, although a very friendly crowd.

Drifting back to HH girls getting harder and meaner, Mrs U.S. likes to think she has good reliable, honest
girls working for her..BUT
A big percentage of her 'new' staff are only in town about a month before they think they can scam her,
and fleece the customers.
These girls are 'fresh' from Issan.
My point here is it does not take long for the 'newbies' to learn new tricks & scams after coming in to
contact with other BGs.
Some of you may say this has always been the case..maybe so, but my Mrs is firing way more staff
nowadays than she ever has in the past..changing face of HH eh?

Say's it all, they even scam family. It's extremely hard to find good thai staff.

I have nothing but love for the Thai people but this is one of the things that gets me. The amount of times I have seen or been informed of a Thai being stitched up in one way or another by a close friend, family, etc. is worrying.

Farnags getting ripped off, scammed, okay I can deal with that - happens in every country. But Close friends or family stitiching each other up is not something often done in Blighty, when it is it normally carries quite severe repurcussions.

The number 1 reason for betraying those close to them ... Jealousy. Jealous about something the other has and they don't.
If it's within arms reach, there's nothing to worry about!!

^ Yes, jealousy (or envy) is a problem anywhere but it does seem to be an even stronger emotion or motive here (or among Thais anywhere) than with anyone else I've ever known.

Jealousy may well be a factor but I wonder how much is to do with the traditional male dominant heirarchy?
Male family members still rule - perhaps the women resort to scamming because they see it as the only way to have things of their own, or to start to make a stand.

You guys are turning me off HH. I first came to HH 3 years ago. Loved it. Especially after, Phuket, Pattaya, Samui. Went back to HH 1 year after that. Loved it again. I just left HH a couple of weeks ago and I noticed changes too! I thought there were loads of retirees. I only seen a handful of young punks!

My brother and I are 1 day away from finalizing the purchase of a home at the Black Mountain golf club.

But, all the talk of the scum that is surfacing in HH is making think twice.

Hua Hin still is a great place to live and visit. Simply avoid 90% of the expats you meet, the red light district, and the center of town and you'll be fine!

Strange you should say this, because practically all the expats I know are actually very decent people to say the least. The only problems I've ever had here was with a Danish family who spend 2 or 3 months of the year here, and expect the entire country to change while they're here. Insulting and pesky - if I could, I'd spray them with some Baygon......lol.

I think you'll find most trouble is caused by drunken tourists, followed by short timers.

Even though I rarely visit the bar area anymore, I have yet to get into a difficult situation. And as for the OP's original post, I also think that if that farang smacked a bar girl, he actually deserved a bloody good beating. Call me old school, but a man who lifts his hands to a woman, (irrespective of profession) is in my opinion nothing more than common trash with a terribly poor upbringing.

Why would anyone fight over a bargirl? Perhaps she wasn't a bargirl. Let's just say, any bugger lifts his hands to my wife, or perhaps to my daughters, they will end up with severe injuries. And that, in my books, doesn't make me a bad person.

And Mrs US's bar is one of the friendliest, low key bars around! You can imagine/see what problems neighboring bars are having.

Mrock,

Dont be put off Hua Hin, the people who are buying here now and over the past few years will completely change the feel of HH when they retire here over the next few years - younger people who have done well in places like middle east/china etc - I see these people all the time and I they are typically cool couple lots of golfers with strong pensions etc behind them. I have just been to Pattaya playing golf and I can promise you that HH will never be anything like Pattaya - not in our lifetime anyway.

As you know the bad news is broadcast - never the good stuff!

Super great place to live plenty of nice bars and loads of good people, get your place bought and enjoy the many great things that HH has to offer. If you wanna game sometime let me know!

Best
