Post by Johanna »

Hi, are the bars/ shops .restaurants etc. closed on July the 2th 3th and the 4th ?
Somebody told me this a few days ago. But I haven't read it on the HHforum yet.

It's the law that no alcohol can be sold during elections, so it will depend on the number of days the ballot goes on for.

Bar owner friends of mine have heard from Police the 2nd starting sometime in the early afternoon and all day on the 3rd. But, being Thailand, this is subject to change.....

Is this bar closure, or just a ban on alcohol?

- Can bars still sell Coke?
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

I was in town for the last elections and they closed all the bars in the centre of town for the weekend and for the weekend before when they had ballots for people living away from their home constituencies.
Further out it was possible to get alchohol in restaurants and smaller places but some wanted you to drink out of coffee cups and hide the bottles!
It was also unavailable in shops although it was a similar situation and some smaller places weren't so strict.
I seem to remember that the ban was supposed to extend until midnight on Sunday but the police relented and allowed bars to open after the polls had closed.
It was a bit hard on bar owners as it was in December when there were many tourists about.

Yes. Actual election was 23 Dec if I remember - try explaining to your average Christmas period holiday maker that the rule is there to stop Thai vote buying during the election. Yet another own goal.

Was it not during the last election that the BIB raided O'Neills / Crawfords? If it was that time, we were in there drinking Tiger beer from tea mugs. They were most upset - but fortunately, as the landlord (whose name escapes me) was explaining that he was a restaurant, some food was delivered, resulting in said BIB disappearing, somewhat disgruntled, to take new orders.
Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....

Perhaps they should use the new "Breathalyser" machines to test people for "Drunk voting" . In the meantime I will be sipping a few cold ones out of a civilised glass rather than a teacup with the shutters down scenario.

And after the elections Bangkok may be burning... ...we had planned to go in July so now we are going up next week to miss the election week and the weeks immediately following when there could be trouble depending on the outcome.

I don't know how Thai elections work, but I've told by someone (who ought to know) that they could be counting the votes for some weeks after the election closes. I'm now due into Bangkok on 12 July, and out on 17 July, and am hoping to miss any excitement. Fingers crossed!
