Wot days are the bars closed..??

Post by usual suspect »

After asking around about this weekend's closure of the bars, I cannot find out which days/nights
they are to close..??
(As per..the police will tell us about 3 hours prior!)
Have been asking bar-owners and they all say the same.."we do not know yet..police not tell us".
Does anyone have the exact days for shut-downs..??
(or do I march into the MIB pen and ask them direct?)

The best thing to do is "march into the MIB pen and ask them direct?"
but I can tell you the following:-

15th July 2011 - Asarnha Bucha Day * (long weekend)
16th July 2011 - Start of Buddhist Rains Retreat

So be prepared for Friday and Saturday night closures.

I do feel for the town centre bar owners who pay high rents and rely heavily on tourists and expats who are not voting anyway. Move a few hundred metres and every bar will be serving in my experience of the last 15 years. On election day I was sitting opposite a large poster of the now Prime Minister with a mixed group of Thais and expats enjoying a few beers at the top of soi 88. The week before there were no problems getting a couple of libations in town in selected places and not out of coffee cups which I have experienced a few times. Do not fear, you will find beer!

While bars will be closed most restaurants will remain open for food & sports. As this is an important Buddist holiday the bars and alcohol sales will not be allowed, but where there is the will,,,,,,,,.

Just to avoid any misunderstanding, the restaurant will still be open as I understand it.

The Public Health Ministry has ordered public health offices throughout the country to coordinate with police and other authorities to make sure the ban on the sale of alcohol is strictly observed on July 15 and 16, an important Buddhist holiday.

Violators are liable to a six-month jail sentence and/or a 10,000 baht fine.

A Prime Minister's Office's order issued in 2009 bans sale of all kinds of alcohol on four important days of for Buddhists - Makha Bucha Day, Wisakha Bucha Day, Asanha Bucha Day and the Buddhist Lent Day.

This year, the Asanha Bucha Day and the Buddhist Lent Day fall on July 15 and 16.

Dr Siriwat Thiptaradol, the deputy permanent secretary for Public Health, said the ban does not cover hotels which are properly registered.

I'll put this here, as it's semi-relevant to the thread, even though it could well have been mentioned in 'Suggestions' before..........but...........

How about a box on the index page with upcoming Thai holidays in it, say 10 days in advance?

What's the position at Admin on it, or the chances of it happening?

It's got to be hugely useful to readers and certainly new/brief visitors, even long stayers too, as I often forget the holidays or they just sneak up on you and can interject on plans. I'm off out in the next hour to buy some beer for tomorrow and the next day and would have been caught out if not for reading Buksida's previous post.

Nice one! Can't be arsed running around tomorrow to find a 'Mom n Pop' shop that will bend the law.

Ah, yes......very basically that may be true, but this thread will drift into history shortly and people, especially new readers/posters/new arrivals in LOS/holiday planners etc will not have the clairvoyance to find this list on this thread, even if presumably they have the foresight and ability to use the 'search function' correctly, which is not an automatic foregone conclusion from experience.

Secondly, we all know that it (anything here actually) just doesn't work out as simply as quoted or expected. We have the days surrounding the official holidays, substitution days for ones that were at weekends, specially sanctioned ones etc etc.

So yes, good list, but it's never as simple as you think. It's also just about having reminders, I'm not anal enough to put every holiday in my phone with an alarm attached to it, plus I work, so generally have other things to think about, but do read this forum every day so would find it useful.........however, that's just me.

Mainly it would be an extra bit of info in a forum/info portal for the casual reader to see.

Edit - Also forgot about stuff like elections and the like and these can influence many plans like travel/boozing/service available etc.

Forgot also to mention the prompt it may give to people with travel plans as we all know how crazy the roads go in and around these dates, plus the ones not mentioned too.

Also worth mentioning that it's just makes the forum look like it's 'in-the-know' about everything and generally being all encompassing and helpful.
