Breaking a glass in a bar

Post by ste860 »

the other night i was out with friends ,when one of them accidently broke a glass,in a bar i wont say which bar ,

so when the bill came they had added 100 baht for the broken glass ,im wondering wether this is a standard practice , i have owned a bar here before and i never would of charged this ,because i think that i want repeat custom ,

so my question is would you

a.. just pay
b.. offer to pay a reasonable ammount
c.. tell them to do one
d.. pay and never go in bar again

for me - D.
If it's accidental I wouldn't expect to pay for the glass, after all I'm paying extra for the drink than I could buy it in a 7/11 to cover the bars runnings costs. Breakages are presumably covered by the inflated drink price too.
I'd pay the bill, rather than bother with any sort of argy-bargy, but probably wouldn't go back to somewhere so sticky.

Tell whoever was loose enough to break it to pay, otherwise do a 3 or 4 on the option front.

I've drank in bars all over the world and I've never seen anyone charged for a broken glass. I would agree it would be fair if you broke it intentionally but not by accident, (lobbing vodka glasses into the fireplace!). I've even drank in bars where they have replaced dropped drinks for free, let alone charging you for the broken glass.
Find a better bar would be my advice.

When this happens in our place and it is accidental then NO..to charge for the glass is a bit much.
(Hell.. invariably the customer will at least order another drink straight away).
Besides I'm sure ours is not the only place with wobbly tables, or the norm is a table gets shifted when a customer squeezes-out to go to the loo..again just an accident..oops.
IF however the glass was broken in lets say drunken anger..with a customer making a problem,
a hasty decision has to sometimes be made as to charge or not..??
(After all, it maybe that the customers state of inebriation is due to the amount of drinks they've bought/consumed in our place..we would hardly sting him for the cost of a glass when he's spent big bucks already) :|
Am I making any sense here..??

You are making good sense. If I were to go to a bar for a beer I would drink it out of the bottle. Then I'ms sure I don't get a dirty glas. Should I, by accident, topple my beer, I would buy a new one. Or perhaps go home since that might be a sign not to have more...

Well - it just struck my mind that Thailand may have invented a new scam here.
First we saw the water scooter scams with the owners claiming thousands of THBs in alleged damages, then the motorcy rentals doing the same. And now, ladies and gentlemen: "The Broken Glass scam" with barkeeps using fragile movie-type glasses that break easily and overcharge the customer for the glass. I say; inginuity has no limits!

Humor, irony and/or sarcasm may apply to the above)

FFS - no bar charges for accidentals, if they do then move on, are you that desperate for 100 Baht that you have to vent your frustration ?

Or am I a victim of spam? :?

This happened to me and my wife in bangkok as she stood up she stumbled and reached out for the table, when she touched it the table moved and her glass fell off the table. bar staff came running over and asked for 100 baht. I does happen in other places as well.

100 baht!!!!!!!!! Robbery!
You must immediately empty the remainder of your beer over the head of the bartender. Upend a few chairs and throw an ashtray or two for good measure.
You have to let them know you refuse to be ripped off so blatantly.
Make sure your friends visit you in hospital.

100 baht is nothing - about 2 quid, but let's not forget, you wouldn't have to pay 2 quid for breaking a glass back in quidland, or any other land for that matter.

I would have paid without argument, but I would also have informed them that I will not be back. It's not about the money - I just don't like supporting places that are owned by _________.

And besides, unless you shop at index, I doubt you'll even be able to find a glass that costs 100 baht.

If you have a customer going postal, surely the last thing you'll be worrying about is getting him to pay for a 10-baht glass! He'd start turning green and expanding before your very eyes...

The answer to the OP's question is pretty obvious, to be honest.

This has happened to me too in Thailand.

Agree there is no point in trying not to pay, but I certainly made a point to make it known that I was very unhappy, and would not return.

Whilst it is debatable whether there are justifiable reasons to charge for the glass, the fact that the charge is considerably more than the price of a replacement glass shows the true spirit of the bar. If I recall, my charge was THB150 for a broken wine glass.

Another annoying bar-theft happened to me recently in Bangkok.

Boddingtons - THB 235 per pint

Fancied a Shandy (it was lunch time) - THB235 also (to top it off the advertised 235 did not include VAT, so paid THB 126 for half a splash of Sprite (from the mixer tap). Mentioned it to the English Pub Manager (not owner), complacent reaction, so will certainly not return there again either!
Only the crumbliest, flakiest Winkie....
