I think most comments above are concerning bars/restaurants closing when they didn't have to, and the announcement being made very late.

I think if you read back through this thread, short notice notification is not unheard of. Problem this time is that there were too many believable scare/rumour/wind-up mongers second guessing what would happen.

Makha Bucha Day is March 1, but the date could vary by a few days. Definite the bars will be shut for that one. There are no others that I can see for the 1Q18. Pete

Checking 'other' sites, March 1st does indeed look like being the one and only bar closure day in the next qtr.

Don't forget, Thursday is Makha Bucha Day.

Thai Law states sale of alcohol is banned on this day.

Stock your drinks and if not enough a small shop will be happy to sell you some alcoholic drinks.

One day when alcohol is a little more difficult to buy. Stock up, it may be the end of the world!
Seriously though, why does a 1 day closure get such a reaction.

I never had a drink yesterday, and so far today also. And I'm still alive!!

I've had one bottle of Federbrau since New Years Eve - I think I'm still breathing.

Seriously, some people enjoy a drink, and hate the surprise when they're told no. Hence the reminder, despite the previous posts talking about the same day.

It's more about the fact that alcohol sale is banned and bars are closed, it's an aggression in social life. Of course we can drink at home, but it's not the same as having a drink in a public place.

There is no harm in taking your own to public places on Makha Bucha Day. It is the sale that is banned, not the consumption.

You are right, I know that. It's easy to take your bottle of whisky and ask for ice and soda or coke. But I want to see you taking your beer bottles in a cool box with ice and walking from one public place to another. Of course you can rent a sherpa.

Brace yourself as the last weekend of this month will be a very long weekend with Asarnha Bucha Day (booze free) on Friday and King Rama X birthday on Monday. So expect all of Bangkok to roll through Hua Hin again and second row park wherever the feck they want....

Speaking of alcohol free days, 27th (Asarnha Bucha) and 28th of July (Buddhist Lent Day) are as per law dry days so expect your favorite waterhole to be either closed or very empty! As always 7/11 and Co will follow so the mom & pop shops around the corner should have their annual economic pick-up.

Cheers,
B.

The last couple of Buddha days had the MIB warning the Mom and Pop shops nearby. And they did do some checks on the day.
