Yes, Sunday 7th is referendum day. Political and religious holidays are 'alcohol free'. Not sure about the 6th. Maybe there is facility for early voting.

Acts of favor and celebratory events will be banned from 6 p.m. Aug. 6 onward until the referendum is concluded Aug. 7, according to the EC. Source - [Mod Edit] We do not need to continually quote rival sites that are NOT official news sources.

“Shops and restaurants are banned from selling alcohol from 6pm on August 6 (Saturday) to midnight on August 7 (Sunday),” Phuket Provincial Police Commander Col Teeraphol Thipjaroen told The Phuket News.

Hotels are included in the alcohol ban, Col Teeraphol confirmed.

“The only places allowed to sell alcohol during the prescribed hours are duty-free stores as the alcohol cannot be consumed until it has been taken out of the country,” he said.

The whole point of an alcohol ban on voting days is so that Thais have a clear head for their voting decision. At least that is the official reason. Of course it will not stop Thais drinking so what's the sense of a ban in hotels, restaurants etc for foreigners who are quite distinguishable from locals. I remember going into a bar/restaurant a few years ago on a 'voting day' in HH and when I asked for a beer, I was told that "You can have one but I'm sorry, your wife can not!" Now that makes sense.
And of course it doesn't stop the local BIB getting their 'fix'.

What indeed..

Thailand has a tourism authority that spends a lot of money encouraging people to visit The Kingdom.

What they ought also to be doing is surveying visitors to establish ways of encouraging them to return, by identifying those annoyances experienced by tourists that are easy to deal with, and lobbying the relevant departments to address them.

Limiting the alcohol restrictions on election days to those who are entitled to vote would be the simplest of measures.

Addressing the issue of bar closures on senior Buddha days is another worthy cause. Simply lifting the closure orders, so bars can carry on blaring loud music on the holiest of days is obviously contentious, but limiting the restriction to a ban on amplified music - and perhaps on every Buddha day, and not just the most significant ones - would show appropriate respect without spoiling people's holidays, and would also be easy to enforce.
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

Can't risk having those few farangs who have Thai citizenship having a sneaky drink on election days can we? Easier to ban everyone.

And it is a few. Only around 20% of applications are approved which comes out at around 10 a year. Even then they're not entitled to vote until they've held citizenship for 5 years. We could hold a party for these people. Wouldn't need a very big venue!

You maybe able squeeze a quick few beers in on the 6th, as I believe as already stated the ban starts 18:00 on the 6th.

No official letter on ban of alcohol on Queen's Birthday, so all bars should be up and running (should the owner decide to do so).... If I remember correctly last year everything was open, which I know doesn't mean much :|

Cheers,
B.
