While bars will be allowed to operate, they must close at 1am and no types of parties will be tolerated within them, Thanakorn Kuptajit of the Thai Alcohol Beverage Business Association said.
However some bars will be closed this weekend, so check ahead.

The rule nationally is that bars can open but cannot play music. The Hua Hin police are, as usual, flexing their muscles and ordering bars to close. However no dictate has been issued. Quite the contrary.

My local restaurant stood up to them and they left!

You can buy alcoholic drinks as usual and also drink in restaurants and bars. I guess bars will reopen on monday.

Over the years, many had feared an extended shut-down of the bars when the current situation reached us.

It was therefore welcome and pragmatic when the minister only stated that the bar trade should be 'toned down'

Thailand's tourist industry is important, but it could be argued that the bar trade is only a small part of tourist revenues and therefore dispensable. It might easily be overlooked that without the benefit of bars, many of Thailand's other attractions would draw far fewer visitors.

And aside from the hard economic numbers, it is also a fact that many of the Kingdom's poorest families regard the bar trade as a safety net against the brutal realities that accompany the lack of a welfare state.

So, be grateful if the bars are open as usual, but don't get loud, don't get blind drunk, and don't pressure the staff to turn up the music.

I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

That's a really good point concerning bars everywhere here. Perhaps they'll find they get more customers who stay longer, drink longer and spend more money without the pounding, throbbing, ear damaging music? Would be a revelation, wouldn't it!

I think if approached by a serious study, they would find that the female staff are the only people who want that kind of music and not the majority of customers. Somehow long ago venues everywhere assumed that foreign visitors liked the same kind of ear splitting music the Thais like and play at every event. I think they would be amazed that it drives more people away than it attracts. Pete

Couldn't agree more. Respect. Not sure how far I can go but I'm sure in the West he would be revered as a saint...
