Not sure if mentioned in previous postings but recommend some dark US detective series hot off the press, well filmed without the standard hollywood gloss.

True Detectives - starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey (both playing excellent parts). IMDB 9.4 rating.

Bosch - starring Titus Welliver. IMDB 9.1 rating

OMG, Harry Bosch is on TV. Michael Connelly’s Bosch novels are a substantal cut above the standard police procedural. Harry's thoughts and inner conflicts are integral to the story. Don't know how it will translate into another medium. But I'm downloading it as we speak.

House of Cards

Netflix just dumped the entire second season onto their servers. Episodes will be appearing shortly in all the usual places. First season rated 9.0 on IMDB, consistent with public reaction. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1856010/?ref_=nv_sr_1

From last year:
Homer wrote: House of Cards is a political drama of power (both naked and subtle), influence and manipulation. Some of the manipulators are blissfully aware they're being used for a higher purpose. You know, Washington DC politics as usual. Kevin Spacy is the lead. Much of the rest of the cast are talented supporting actors from film and TV with long lists of credits.
Didn't notice until today the series was released on Valentines day both years. Well of course. It's about people who love power more than anything.

Just finished watching Mad Dogs a four-part mini series. Absolutely superb! I'm rubbish at writing reviews, so here's what the story's about:

A reunion of a group of 40-something male friends that goes drastically wrong. Woody (Max Beesley), Quinn (Philip Glenister), Baxter (John Simm) and Rick (Marc Warren) have been friends since sixth form. The fifth member of their gang, Alvo (Ben Chaplin), now lives in Majorca, having made his fortune in property. When he invites the others to stay at his villa to celebrate his retirement, they look forward to a week of sun and relaxation, but events take a sinister turn and the friends find themselves caught up in a nightmare of deception and murder.

Black humour at its best.

I'm sure Sherlock would be better if I could understand more of what they're saying, was my first and only impression of Sherlock. Bailed half way through the first episode. Two weeks ago I read there are Sherlock torrents with subtitle files. That's not news. English subtitles. Neither is that. No other language subtitles. Now that's different! Somebody decided the series was too good to derive the rest of the English speaking world the pleasure of watching - and understanding. Though I still get confused about the difference between 'take the piss' and 'take a piss'.

One of the good places for searching for subtitles, in multiple languages is OpenSubtitles.org. I use it in combination with their Movie Subtitles Searcher that is integrated into Windows File Explorer so you can just right click on a movie/TV-series file to select the language you want to search a subtitle for that file.

I've been watching the second series of "Line of Duty" a police drama showing on BBC2. This week was episode 5 of 6 and it was gripping stuff and is already being tipped for best drama of the year - well worth looking out for it if you haven't been watching it.

I taped the first bunch of Black Sails a new series shown here in the states about pirates. Watched the first 3 episodes and enjoyed them

Just finished it and once again left hanging

Follow up?

I would have thought/hoped so, because as you say, it felt like you were left hanging!! In fact I've just looked it up and a third series is confirmed for 2015 - "Yes, the BBC confirmed yesterday that Line of Duty will return for a third series, hopefully in 2015. Line of Duty was always designed as a long-running series, with AC12 investigating a different case each time. And with Cottan now promoted to AC12 on a permanent basis, it’s all neatly poised...

^ Thanks. I'll have forgotten series 2 by then and will no doubt need a rerun to refresh the grey matter

I see West wing reffered to in the previous post:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200276/?ref_=nv_sr_1

My oldest son and I started wathcing it in 2005 and were glued to the Television, often watching 2 or 3 episodes a night, this was the winter before Mrs La Rue from Thailand became Mrs La Rue and came staying with us, so there was only us boys.

I got push back from the republicans on another forum at that time (Bangkok tonight - ExpatChuck did certainly NOT like it), but for me not having grown up in the US it was very informative about the political process, the presidency and the ado - intelligent and believable plots, great acting. I think Leo became my favourite, but all the characters are enjoyable to watch.
One Day I'm gona die. I can live with that.

I'm just working my way through the second season now, I love how they retained the breaking of the fourth wall (talking to camera) that was a big part of the UK version from the 90's.
