Geography Challange
Geography Challange
Don't cheat and look up the answers... It's no fun that way!
In what country is the tallest mountain on earth located?

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: Geography Challange
I though I knew the answer, so did look it up. I was surprised to find the answer is that it is located in 2 countries.

Re: Geography Challange
Now is this going to be a trick question......?
Everest is the tallest - height above sea level, but I seem to remember watching a program some time ago that named another which was "taller" when you included it's height below the surface of the ocean. Basically it was an island, but I can't for the life of me remember it's name.
With regards to Everest, BB's comment has thrown me - without searching, I would have said Nepal.

Based on both of your comments, I think it's Nepal and India.pharvey wrote:Now is this going to be a trick question......?

Geography Challange
Did well in geography at school and actually very interested in volcanoes so Mauna Kea came up as a great example of a type that is prominent in Hawaii.
I noticed the OP asked for the tallest, not the highest; that I thought was directing me to Mauna Kea rather than Everest as the former has a height which is measured from it's base below the sea. Probably about 3000' taller from memory.
Interested what the OP sees as his correct answer.

I wouldn't dream of spoiling the fun after looking it up, but to check my answer I simply put the question in the OP straight into Google. The answer that surprised me was in the first paragraph of the first hit.Dannie Boy wrote:Based on both of your comments, I think it's Nepal and India.pharvey wrote:Now is this going to be a trick question......?

Still say Hawaii, USA but might Google soon after this chit chat about Nepal and earthquakes.hhinner wrote:I think anyone who watched news reports of the Nepal earthquake would know. But I might be wrong. Haven't checked Google yet.
Re: Geography Challange
As the question is what country, I would go with Nepal....at least that's what I learned in school a loooong time ago :-)

Re: Geography Challange
Correct! Mauna Kea is about a mile taller than Everest if you count the part below sea level. So the correct answer was The United States. Even though you didn't provide the answer (U.S.A.), I assume you know which country Hawaii belongs to so you win the privilege of asking the next challenge question!dalmatiandave wrote:Did well in geography at school and actually very interested in volcanoes so Mauna Kea came up as a great example of a type that is prominent in Hawaii.

Did provide USA as answer in my second post (8) but, yes, my original post just mentioned Hawaii.hhfarang wrote:Correct! Will give a thought to a question later.
Re: Geography Challange
While we're waiting for dalmatiandave's question, this is the statement that surprised me about Everest:
By 'straddles' I take it to mean it is on either side of the border, which would put it in both Nepal and China.Reaching 29,029 feet (8,848 meters) above sea level, Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth. Located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas, the mountain's summit straddles the border separating China and Nepal.

Re: Geography Challange
Those numbers aren't accurate anymore if taken before the earthquake. The News at the time was saying Everest went up 1 meter +-

Re: Geography Challange
^ Well, has to be said - it's the first I've heard of Everest being in China!! BUT, then again it's Tibet, which of course is classed as part of China..
When you mentioned 2 countries, really should have guessed Tibet!!
Still not having this USA/Hawaii b*ll*cks - you Americans want everything!!
