Ray Lamontagne Concert Review

Post by Jaime »

St David's Hall, Cardiff 16 October 2007

If Ray ever makes it to Thailand, make sure you go and see him. Vids of his Cardiff gig are already on You Tube for those who want a taste of the evening.

Here's the review:

OK, so now I’m no longer a Ray Lamontagne gig virgin. The evening started off well by getting one of the signed tour posters and then, after a pint in the bar we went in to see the support act, Sarabeth Tucek. However, when we sat in our seats in the back row of Tier 7 (pretty good seats ordinarily), the diminutive Mrs Jaime let out a plaintive yelp; “I can’t see!!â€

Phew! Thank God for that, Chelsea. I thought I was the lone ignoramus! Who is he, please, Jaime? :D

I checked him out on the web as well, as having read Jaimes review, I assumed he was some legendary old timer now rediscovered, what with forgetting words to songs and all that. Came as a shock to learn he was 33 and had only recorded 2 albums!

For all of you old farts who like good music, Ray Ramontagne is a contemporary musician you can actually enjoy!

If you want to put him in a box, you could decribe his genre as something like acoustic alternative country/folk.

As an introduction, here are some links:

Here is my own You Tube clip of him performing Trouble at the Cardiff gig:

Here's another clip of him with Damien Rice performing To Love Somebody (Ray is the one with the biggest beard!)

If you go to his MYSpace website, you can click on the songs top right of page & listen for free:

Yes, I am becoming a Ray Lamontagne evangelist!

Great link Baa Baa - some tracks on there that I don't have! Cheers!

Well, not strictly true. He's recorded two with major labels - those being Trouble & Till the Sun Turns Black, but he's also recorded self released & indie albums like One Lonesome Saddle and Acre of Land beforehand. They are now legitimately available for free on the web. I'll look the link up if anyone's interested.

Hey Baa Baa - all the songs seem to be unavailable. Is it the same at your end?

:? :? :? ?????????

Yes, 50-60% are unavailable for me too!

Not sure what the problem is, ive seen it before on 1 track I wanted but could download it the next day.

It doesnt happen often though and Ive downloaded loads of music from this site.

I'd try again later.

Well I'd never heard of him before but after listening to a few cuts off you tube I did like his style. Yes I'd go see him.

Kinda reminds me of Edwin Mcain

If you really didn't want to know the answer, why the hell did you ask me the question!!!

Hey Baa Baa,

Here's a good place to get free downloads of Ray's live & unreleased stuff. They are all currently available to download and my favourite is probably You Should Belong to Me but they're all great, including corking covers of So Tired of Waiting, To Love Somebody and most famously (for Ray fanatics like me), Gnarls Barklay's Crazy

Anyway, don't just take my word for it; here's the review of last night's Manchester gig from the Manchester Evening News:
