Dan Singkhon Myanmar border crossing to open

Post by buksida »

Thailand and Myanmar have agreed to open three more permanent border checkpoints to give a boost to economic development.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Myanmar President Thein Sein agreed on the Myanmar-proposed initiative on the sidelines of the 22nd Asean Summit in Brunei which ended on Thursday.

Deputy government spokesman Phakdeeharn Himathongkham said Ms Yingluck thanked the Myanmar government for raising the issue.

The checkpoints are between Thailand's Three Pagodas Pass in Kanchanaburi and Myanmar's Phayatongsu town; Ban Nam Pu Ron in Kanchanaburi and Myanmar's Tiki town; and the Singkorn temporary checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Myanmar's Mortong town, he said.

Mr Phakdeeharn said Ms Yingluck told Thein Sein that opening three more checkpoints would help strengthen ties between Thailand and Myanmar.

He said Ms Yingluck took the opportunity during her meeting to follow up an earlier request made by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul about Rohingya migrants.

He called for the Myanmar government to send officials to Thailand to investigate the Rohingya migrants being detained here.

Mr Surapong said during the Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting in Brunei this month that he had sought cooperation from his Myanmar counterpart Wunna Maung Lwin to help return about 2,000 detained Rohingya to Myanmar.

Wunna Maung Lwin had pledged to take them back if his officials found they truly came from Myanmar's Rakhine state.

Mr Phakdeeharn said the two leaders also discussed the progress of the Dawei deep-sea port development project after Thailand and Myanmar earlier set up a joint committee to monitor the project.

He said Ms Yingluck told Thein Sein that Thailand had finished drafting a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) shareholder agreement.

She said she would like the Myanmar side to consider it.

The agreement sets the environment of shareholder rights and regulations for the management and operational policies of the project.

Mr Phakdeeharn said the two countries agreed they would meet to further discuss finance and investment issues for the project and would invite Japan to join the talks next month.

At the Asean Summit, Ms Yingluck proposed the connectivity of the three Asean pillars - political-security, economic, and socio-cultural communities - through cultural activities and tourism to promote public interaction.

She also wants to push forward assistance in medicine, public health, and education.

Thought: Article doesn't indicate whether foreigners can cross there. Visa runs won't be possible until they setup an immigration check point on the Burmese side. The border opening is a good sign though.

If the Dan Singkorn crossing was made available for Farang Visa-stamps it maybe (with a bit of promotion) boost tourism for Pratchaup town & Ao Manao Bay..??
Fingers crossed that the powers-that-be make it possible to process visas for overseas vistors.

Don't get you hopes up. If the Thais will do something about the border situation it will not be to accommodate farangs. Thais always come first, farangs last.

:agree: Access to the Mergui coastline from DSK isn't going to happen for a loooong time.

At the moment there is a new road (paid for by Yingyang) to what appears to be a quarry around 20kms from the border. After this it is another 60kms through mountainous jungle and dirt tracks to the coast.

I've crossed a couple of times in various spots along this border between DSK and Ranong and there is literally nothing on the Burmese side whatsoever. The best we can hope for is an immigration shed for visa runners opening within the next five years. Else it will be for Thais only to cross and spend all of their money in Thaksin's new casino.

Singkhon border point to become a permanent crossing

Post by Paderborn »

Hi everyone
I know we have heard this before.. but maybe this is a step near
I have just read this piece on the National News Bureau of Thailand ...

The Thai and Myanmar leaders have agreed to upgrade the Singkhon border crossing to the status of a permanent crossing point, a government official has advised.

The Governor of Prachuab Khiri Khan, Weera Sriwatanathrakul said that during his official visit to Myanmar, the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and President Thein Sein discussed an upgrade of the Singkhon border crossing. Both countries agreed that an upgrade could be done before the confirmation of a border area survey report, from the Thai-Myanmar Joint Boundary Commission.

The Thai government can proceed to make an announcement of the upgrade after the approval of cabinet.

There will be a celebration of the opening of the permanent crossing point and activities to promote the relationship between the two countries. This is an important step forward for the economy in Prachuab Khiri Khan province, and helps prepare it for the AEC integration next year, said the governor.

The PM’s visit to Myanmar also saw the signing of a sister cities agreement between Prachuab Khiri Khan province of Thailand and Marid City of Myanmar. -

Thai-Myanmar border checkpoint eyed as new tourist attraction
BANGKOK, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Thai authorities are eyeing a Thai-Myanmar border checkpoint in the lower central part of the country as another Thai tourist attraction.

Named Daan Singkhorn, the Thai-Myanmar border checkpoint in Prachuab Kirikhan province could be developed into a new tourist attraction for both Thai and foreign visitors, said Provincial Governor Veera Sriwattanatrakul in an interview with Xinhua on Monday.

The border checkpoint, located at the western end of a 12- kilometer strip between the Thai shoreline straddling the Gulf of Thailand and Myanmar's mountainous Tanintharyi region, has the potentials of being another tourist spot and at the same time serve as the gateway to southern Myanmar, according to Veera.

Western Thailand and southern Myanmar are divided by Tenasserim mountain range from up north in Mae Hongson province to down south along Malaya peninsula passing Daan Singkhorn.

"The authorities, including those of the National Security Council and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, should promote Daan Singkhorn border checkpoint as a permanent trading and tourist spot linking Thailand and Myanmar," Veera said.

"Up to five million Thai and foreign tourists are expected to visit Daan Singkhorn border checkpoint on their way to the interior of Myanmar in a year," Veera said.

Veera also called on the Thai authorities in Bangkok to resolve the dispute over the border demarcation line between the two Southeast Asian states as soon as possible. He said the ruling junta in Thailand should take steps to reach compromise on the dispute with the present government in Naypyidaw which is also headed by a former general.

A new Myanmar government could change the country's foreign policy after a nationwide election scheduled later this year but Thai authorities should start opening talks with their counterparts in Myanmar regarding the proposal, Veera said.

According to Veera, while Hua Hin, a major beach resort city north of Prachuab Kirikhan, is viewed as the gateway to southern Thailand, Daan Singkhorn should likewise be deemed as the gateway to Myanmar's Mergui archipelago in the Andaman Sea.

Veera said the border checkpoint, only about 300 kilometers south of the Thai capital, should be developed into a permanent tourist spot through the construction of more infrastructure projects and tourism-related facilities.

Prachuab Kirikhan province, including Hua Hin, could earn some 1.2 billion U.S. dollars every year in revenues from local and foreign tourists that would visit the proposed tourism site, the provincial governor said.

He said some investors have already bought lands in Prachuab Kirikhan to be used for the construction of tourism-related projects. These investors have envisioned that businesses in the area would flourish with the implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community at the end of this year.

"Tourism-related businesses are expected to sprout throughout the province, especially in urban areas leading to Daan Singkhorn, if the border checkpoint would eventually be opened as the gateway to Mergui and other parts of southern Myanmar," Veera said.

Presently hotels and guesthouses in Hua Hin and Prachuab Kirikhan have only a combined 20,000 rooms available for visitors and more should be built to accommodate those who may plan to visit southern Myanmar via Daan Singkhorn, he said.

Veera said foreign travelers may visit Daan Singkhorn and then proceed across the border to Mergui archipelago instead of coming from inside Myanmar.

Thailand's Mae Sot in Tak province currently deals in cross- border trade and tourism with Myanmar's Myawaddy town across Moei River up north from Prachuab Kirikhan province.

I was up there last week, and with the huge developments going on, they can only be preparing for a tourist invasion.

I flew into Myeik Myanmar a few months back. You might say it's still in the National Geographic stage of development. Like going back in time.

Why else would there be so much development there - the Burmese/Thai traffic will not justify it.
