Some 'crossings' along Thailands borders are kept busy due to the fact that within 100m of passing thru' the gate/barrier you'll find a casino..that sometimes accounts for the hoards of minivans on the Thai side..not visa-run shuttles.

Cabinet gave green light to Singkhon special border checkpoint
The Cabinet has approved the opening of the Singkhon special border checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan province in the hope to stimulate the economy in the border area.

Deputy Government Spokesman Maj.Gen. Sansern Kaeokamnerd said the Cabinet instructed the Ministry of Interior to issue a ministerial announcement detailing clear operational guidelines for people, vehicles and goods passing the border checkpoint. The announcement was expected to also provide guidelines for prevention of problems that might occur, the deputy spokesman said.

Prachuap Khiri Khan province was instructed to develop a mechanism to control and tackle possible effects on national security after the border checkpoint was opened. If the province needed to construct anything or arrange activities at the border zone, it should ask the Royal Thai Survey Department and the Royal Thai Armed Forces to check information before proceeding, Maj.Gen. Sansern said.

The Cabinet approved the establishment of the special border checkpoint despite the problem of demarcation at the border zone. The prime minister did not want such problem to be obstruction of trade and investment promotion in the area, said the deputy spokesman.

The government believed that the checkpoint would make the area’s border trade value leap and facilitate both Thai and Myanmar businesses more efficiently, the deputy spokesman added.

After the border checkpoint is opened, Myanmar people can travel to Prachuap Khiri Khan province and stay in Thailand for one night by using only their passport and temporary border pass.

This sounds like a step in the right direction towards eventually...
a)..being able to do 'visa runs'..(if they get round to recognising ex-pats needs) &
b) ..possibly a chance in yrs to come to venture inland, or even across land for a 'grand day out' at the seaside...

.... :D

Prachuap Khiri Khan to launch tourism caravan to Myanmar
Prachaup Khiri Khan province is set to launch the inauguration tourism caravan to Myeik in Myanmar, to mark the official opening of the Singkhon special border checkpoint on 23 May 2015.

Prachaup Khiri Khan Deputy Governor Pongpan Wichiansamut has revealed that the province is set to hold the official opening ceremony of the Singkhon special border checkpoint on 23 May 2015, with the expected attendance from the Thai Minister of Interior, the Myanmar Minister of Finance and Revenue, and the Myanmar Minister of Commerce.

The event will include a merit making and alms giving ceremony of the two countries, cultural exchange performances, and the launch of the 2-day 1-night inaugural tourism caravan to Myeik, Myanmar. The tour caravan will carry 200 participants from both government and private agencies in Prachaup Khiri Khan province.

The caravan will introduce the participants to tourist attractions and the local livelihood. All travelers will be awarded with the certificate from the governor of Prachaup Khiri Khan and the Governor of Myanmar’s Tanintharyi Region.

The upgrade of the Singkhon border post as the special border checkpoint will allow travelers from Myanmar to access the Mueang Prachaup Khiri Khan district on Thailand’s side by using passports, border passes, or temporary border passes and will be allowed at least a one night stay. Travellers from Thailand will be allowed to access the Tanintharyi town and the Myeik tow with a different overnight stay quota, depends on the type of document used at the border crossing, based on Myanmar’s regulations.

The upgraded status means that citizens of Thailand and Myanmar are allowed to enter their respective neighbouring countries for up to two days. Visitors from Myanmar can go no farther than Muang district.

[...]

Local authorities and traders were pushing for Singkhorn to be a fully fledged permanent checkpoint but the government decided to make it only a special crossing because border demarcation in the area is still unclear.
No specific reference to other nationalities, but it doesn't look as though this will be open for border runs.
This is the way

When we do our 'Border runs' to Phu Nam Rong & the Andaman route we pay ~ 900B to do so.
My question here is who benefits from this fee..? Well, let me put this another way..if someone in immigration has some foresight he MAY just work out how many long-stayers there are between Bang Saphan & H.H. then at 900b a head each time.
Now would that swing the local powers-that-be to open up this crossing for us if there were financial gains for them..?

Haphazardly wandered into Burma 2 weeks back via the stairs on the side to the "Burmese" market. Noted the border checkpoint behind me and quickly wandered back into LOS before noticed by people in uniform

Coordination center to boost transport of goods through Singkhon Pass opens
Prachuap Khiri Khan province has opened the Thai-Myanmar Public-Private Coordination Center to help facilitate trade, investment and tourism between the two countries.

Provincial Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan Weera Sriwattanatrakul said the center had been set up due to revised customs clearance and border crossing regulations of the Singkhon Pass in Mueang district. The center provided information on trade, investment and tourism and facilitated Thai and Myanmar entrepreneurs, said the governor. He also expressed his belief that the center would help increase Thailand’s border trade value.

The Singkhon pass and the coordination center were aimed at motivating Thai and Myanmar entrepreneurs to transport goods through the Singkhon pass in order to help stimulate border economies, the governor said.

Located at the Singkhon Pass, the Thai-Myanmar Public-Private Coordination Center will be officially opened on 14 September 2015. The opening ceremony of a one stop service center—an integration of work of relevant units at the border zone—has been scheduled for the same day.

Prachuap Khiri Khan to build new border crossing building at Singkhon
Prachuap Khiri Khan Province is set to construct a border crossing building at Singkhon border with a budget of 240 million baht, to facilitate the expanding border trade and growing investment.

Prachuap Khiri Khan Public Works and Town & Country Planning Official Somboon Nuancharoen has said the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning has received 77 million baht, designated as a budget for the development of Singkhon border crossing to facilitate the increasing trade and investment activities after the area was declared a special alleviation zone.

He has said the department has also received 240 million baht budget for the construction of the CIQ border crossing building accommodating the immigration process, as well as the process of inspection and quarantine of people and goods crossing the border.

The province is now coordinating with the Royal Forest Department requesting the land use permission before construction begins. The design of the building will resemble the identity of Thai agriculture.

Prachuap Khiri Khan Province will be welcoming the Chief Minister of Myanmar’s Tanintharyi Region as well as officials and businessmen attending the discussion with officials and private sector of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

Both sides will be discussing future upgrades to Singkhon border crossing into a permanent border crossing to maximize border trade facilitation and investment. The visiting group will be observing the development and trading activities at the Singkhon border.
