Super Joe, they also had plants in Africa as well. I never went there but later worked in Cairo building tunnel boring machines to build the Cairo tunnel. That was fun .

It seems that the land rover has been very popular and used all over the world . The Willis jeep i would have thought would be the same , as this was a very good tool used by the USA army and therefore had much publicity , any thoughts on that anyone.

Although I hate to admit it, the first Landrover was a blatant copy of a WW2 Jeep!

I think that one of the reasons Landrover made such inroads was mostly to do with marketing. The UK developed the Land Rover initially for export, in an attempt to generate overseas income following the War. Many of their markets, such as Australia and South Africa, were still either part of the "Empire", or closely associated, so they had a foot in the door. The UK was basically broke after the War, so there was a very limited home market.

Conversely, America, and American manufacturing, had a huge home market clamoring for everything that could be produced. There was probably very little demand for a small 4 cylinder "military tool".

That should not detract from what is a good product in the Jeep. :cheers

Nostalgia over LandRovers?? Hell they were a pig to drive and steer in the Army and forever infected with little prob's but to be fair easily fixed. Much prefer the Jap beasts including the early Toyotas.

The new model was released a few months ago, and has a lot of changes.
The most revolutionary change, not mentioned in the review, is the twin turbo chargers fitted to the V6 Diesel Engine, developed in conjunction with Jaguar.
Under normal use only one Turbo Charger is used, assisting with economy. On demand the second Turbo cuts in via valving, and they claim that maximum torque is obtained in 500 milliseconds. The fuel injectors are also state of the art with high speed piezo nozzles with the tip deep inside the engine to reduce noise.

One of the drawbacks with these vehicles in Thailand has always been the poor service back up provided by the agents. They have always only been interested in selling new cars, and only provide the mandatory warranty service, not wanting to service any car out of warranty.

One of those links mentions yet another change in the corporate structure in Thailand.

So much for the new model! or have the Yanks taken over the title of bigger whingers??

Despite a torrent of high-profile recalls that have tarnished Toyota's once stellar reputation, a study published Wednesday reveals that the automaker actually gets fewer customer complaints per car than the majority of its competitors.

Edmunds.com reviewed more than 200,000 complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over the last decade and found that Toyota ranked 17th among the top 20 automakers in the overall number of complaints per vehicle sold.

The study was based on the percentage of complaints each automaker received versus the total number of vehicles they sold in the United States between 2001 and 2010.

As a result, British carmaker Land Rover had the highest proportion of complaints relative to the number of cars it sold. The company received 0.6% of the total complaints in the database, while its sales amounted to only 0.1% of all new cars sold in the United States.

Some new info just published. The Thais must sure love their Rovers as more reviews published on them than any other SUV here, per my memory. Pete

I hope they are better there than here! I have a Land Rover Freelander, it has been a nightmare since day one, and it's always some kind of electronic problem.

Only 3 months Nereus until this rolls around again. They've been upgrading again as well. It seems to me this is about the 5th upgrade/new introduction this year. Pete

Too late. After the latest "stealth" problem I sold the Freelander and bought Mercedes C32 AMG. I should have stuck with German engineering to begin with.

Yes, I will try and find out when and where it is this year, Pete.
I think that the other "upgrades" you refer to are on the different models, such as the Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport etc.

The whole damn lot of them are over priced, and combined with the poor after sales "service", the new cars are only for the super rich, OR the Government!

I think that I posted a while ago about the armoured Range Rovers (20 Units!) that the Government purchased. I have recently read an article about them in a Land Rover magazine. They are production vehicles that are shipped to France to specialist company "Centigon", and certified after conversion by "Quintec", a privatised former branch of the Ministry of Defence. They meet the European standards of blast and ballistic protection, (EN1063 to BR6). They are fitted with the naturally aspirated 4.4 Litre petrol V8, which will be upgraded to the 5.0 litre version sometime this year. The price at this time last year was listed at 220,000 GBP. There is also a "cheaper" version based on the the Land Rover Discovery, which is available with the TDV6 diesel engine. (125,000 GBP last year)

Not sure just how these cars are being supported here, as the word around the clubs indicates a lot of dissatisfaction with the "new" agents. The previous agent that supplied the 20 cars to the Government "retired" from the scene just after the deal!

I really like the Land Rover Defender models, i think they look really cool and i would love to own one if i had the money. I owned a Jeep Liberty(Cherokee) when i lived in the US and was a member of Jeep off-roaders club.
