Hua Hin celebrates decade of Sixes cricket

ROGER CRUTCHLEY

The Hua Hin Cricket Sixes is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and by all indications it will be something special both on and off the pitch.

As always the action, from April 6-10, will take place at the well-appointed grounds of the Dusit Resort, a most delightful setting for cricket, or anything else for that matter.

Eleven teams from Australia, England, South Africa, Hong Kong and Thailand with be taking part in the tournament this year. Seven sides will be competing for the Cup and another four for the Plate.

During the past decade many legendary names have played in the tournament including former England stars Mike Gatting, Alan Lamb and John Lever, Barry Richards from South Africa and Australia's Colin Miller and Trevor Chappell.

Miller, an exciting all-rounder who played in 18 Tests for Australia, is expected to return this year and will be playing for the hosts, the Dusit Superstars who always put on a good showing.

Another strong team will be the local Thai Thevada, who will have a side in both the Cup and Plate competitions. The Cup side looks particularly strong with the experienced Richard Bowater and David Currie in the squad, along with arguably Thailand's finest-ever cricketer, Larn Thongyai.

Leading the overseas challenge will be defending champions Melbourne Cricket Club who will be determined to hold on to the Dusit Trophy which they won in exciting fashion last year.

Also from Australia are Canterbury CC who won the title two years ago and will be hoping to repeat their success this time around.

Another Australian side are Elsternwick CC also from the Melbourne area, ensuring there will be stiff competition for their neighbours. Completing the Cup line-up with be Almar CC from South Africa who have been regular competitors at this tournament and have always put on a strong showing.

Representing England are Whitwell CC from Derbyshire who arrive with a reputation for playing entertaining cricket.

Featuring in the Plate will be Hong Kong Police, who have been regular visitors to Hua Hin and have consistently performed well and with a good spirit.

The Plate also will see in action the local side, the Hua Hin Hopalongs. Led by Colin Devonshire the Hopalongs are always full of enthusiasm and have upset some of the more fancied sides in the past.

Thai Thevada will field a second team in the Plate, led by the redoubtable Tom Karnasuta, while Melbourne will also feature a side in the Plate competition.

Paul Edwards will be in charge of the umpiring along with M. Kader.

The tournament gets underway with a welcome BBQ dinner on the beach at the Dusit Resort this evening.

The action proper begins tomorrow morning and promises to kick off five days of entertaining cricket.

HUA HIN SIXES

Gull swoops for heroic haul in dramatic over

ROGER CRUTCHLEY

Hua Hin _ Melbourne Cricket Club Red remained unbeaten in the Cup competition of the 10th Hua Hin Sixes yesterday, but even they will admit they were extremely fortunate after an extraordinary game against the Dusit Superstars at the pleasant Dusit Resort ground.

The last game of the day also proved to be the best as MCC Red collapsed dramatically thanks to a superb piece of bowling by Ilyas Gull, who took an amazing four wickets for no runs in the final over bowled by Dusit.

No-one could recall seeing a bowler take four wickets in a sixes over before and it was a superb effort by the Pakistani player. MCC Red actually lost five wickets in the last seven balls of their innings to finish with a meagre total of 39 all out.

More drama was to follow however. Dusit appeared to be coasting to victory with former Australian Test star Colin ''Funky'' Miller going along nicely as they chased the small target. But when Miller was caught on the boundary for 22 on the second ball of the final over things changed dramatically and some excellent bowling by Randall saw his team grab an unlikely one-run victory over the hosts.

It must have been a great disappointment for Gull and the rest of his team, but it just shows how unpredictable cricket can be, especially in sixes.

The victory means that MCC Red are certain to enter the semi-finals of the Cup, while Dusit, who have a 2-2 record, will have to wait and see developments in the next two days.

Earlier in the day MCC scored a comfortable victory over the South African side Almar. MCC raced to 90 for 2 thanks to good knocks from Steve McCooke (22) and Mike Rattenbury (22 not out) while Almar could only muster 43 for one in reply.

Dusit were also successful in their earlier game when they defeated Canterbury in another low-scoring match.

Dusit managed 43 for 1 thanks to Gull's 19 not out and restricted Canterbury to just 30 runs with some very tight bowling.

In the other Cup match yesterday, Australia's Elsternwick overcame Almar by 12 runs. Keegan de Ridder led the way for Elsternwick with an exciting 33 as the Australians reached 60 for 2 and Almar could only manage 50 in reply despite a fine 36 not out by Terry.

In the Plate competition, Whitwell appear to be making the running as they remain undefeated. In yesterday's action the English side, supported by an enthusiastic ''Barmy Army'', hit a useful 68 for one thanks to an excellent unbeaten 39 by Paul Goodwin. MCC Blue batted gamely but could only reach 50, falling well short in their run chase.

In the second Plate match yesterday MCC Blue had more success, comprehensively beating Hong Kong Woodbines, whose bowling let them down. MCC Blue managed 63-0, thanks to 35 extras, and then restricted the Woodbines to 48.

The tournament continues today at the Dusit Resort ground and will see Thai Thevada in action for the first time in the Cup while Green Parrot will be making a much-anticipated debut in the Plate. The matches begin at 11am and continue throughout the day.

10TH HUA HIN SIXES

Feathers fly as parrots fall off their perch
ROGER CRUTCHLEY
Hua Hin _ Host Dusit Superstars made a big step towards the semi-finals of the Cup competition after defeating Thai Thevada on the third day of the 10th Hua Hin Sixes at the picturesque Dusit Resort ground yesterday.

However, in the Plate the Green Parrot side definitely looked a bit off colour.

It was Thai Thevada's first match in the competition and, considering the slow outfield, they put up a reasonably competitive score of 56 for 2 led by Charlee Kader who hit a quickfire 16.

Unfortunately for Thai Thevada they found former Australian Test star Colin ``Funky'' Miller at his funkiest for the Superstars as Miller raced to 33 not out, ably supported by Illyus Gull.

The win gave the Superstars a 3-2 record ,which should be enough to clinch a semi-final place, depending on today's action.

Thai Thevada had more success in their second match with a convincing victory over Almar from South Africa.

Once again Charlee Kader proved to be the driving force as he raced to 27 not out before having to retire after the ball came off the edge of the bat giving him a nasty black eye. The ever-reliable Jackson added another 18 not out as Thai Thevada reached 54-2.

Almar never really looked like they could overhaul the Thevada score despite a spirited 17 from Greenie and fell well short with just 29-2.

It was a busy day in the Plate competition which saw Hong Kong Woodbines enjoy two victories.

The Hong Kong side began the day with a fairly comfortable victory over Whitwell from England. Whitwell made 57-3 thanks to a useful 19 not out by Tim Coombs. However the Woodbines batted well with Gull scoring an excellent 24 not out as the Hong King side overhauled the score with an over to spare.

In their second match, the Woodbines scored an emphatic victory over Hua Hin Hopalongs. Once again Gull starred with the bat with an exciting 38 not out, ably supported by Tauseef who hit a well compiled 20 as their side reached 79-1.

Once key batsman Gary Chatfield was out for nine the Hopalongs never looked like reaching their target despite a spirited 18 by Johnnie Walker and 11 not out by skipper Colin Devonshire.

The Hopalongs fared better in their earlier match when they defeated Green Parrot. The Parrots reached 56-2 thanks primarily to Mr Extras who scored an impressive 35. Tom Karnasutra also contributed with a classic captain's knock of 16 not out.

Unfortunately for the Parrots they came up against Chatfield at his best as he thumped 36 not out as Hua Hin overhauled their target with some ease.

It was not a good day for the Parrots who were knocked off their perch by Whitwell in the last match of the day. Whitwell made 57-1 thanks to a fine 29 not out from Ian Tanner but the Parrots' batting let them down. Once again Mr Extras did his best with 25 but with no batsmen making double figures it was all in a lost cause.

Green Parrot captain David Currie could only comment ``I feel as sick as a Parrot,'' after his team's performance but promised they would put on a better performance today or ``feathers will be flying''.

The day's proceedings were made all the more entertaining by some perceptive commentary from Miller, whose astute observations were much appreciated by the spectators, if not the players.

There is everything to play for today both in the Cup and the Plate competition and there should be some competitive matches commencing with the clash between Thai Thevad and MCC Red at 10am.

SCORES

CUP: Dusit Superstars 58-0 (Miller 33 not out) beat Thai Thevada 56-3; Thai Thevada 54-2 (Charlee Kader 27 not out) bt Almar 29-2

PLATE: Hong Kong Woodbines 59-2 (Gull 24 not out) bt Whitwell 57-3; Hua Hin 57-0 (Chatfield 36 not out) bt Green Parrot 56-2; Hong Kong Woodbines 79-1 (Gull 38 not out) bt Hua Hin 53-2; Whitwell 57-1 (Tanner 29 not out) bt Green Parrot 44-4.

CRICKET -- 10TH HUA HIN SIXES Finals

Post by troopie »

Explosive `Powder Keg' blasts Elsternwick to victory at Hua Hin

ROGER CRUTCHLEY

Hua Hin _ Elsternwick Cricket Club proved worthy champions of the 10th Hua Hin Sixes when they defeated Canterbury in the final of the Cup competition at the beautiful Dusit Resort ground yesterday.

It was a fine team display from the Australian side although in the final it took an explosive batting display from Keegan ``The Powder Keg'' De Ridder to settle the issue against Canterbury.

With powerful opening batsman Marcus Olive going cheaply, Elsternwick were in early trouble but De Ridder turned things around with a match-winning 31 not out.

He was ably supported by Nobby Lynch with a neatly compiled 17 as Elsternwick reached an impressive 78-3 off their five overs.

With Glen Sanguinetti in their side Canterbury were capable of reaching that target but, hampered by a muscle injury, Sanguinetti could only manage 17 as Elsternwick's bowlers kept the rest of the Canterbury line -up in check.

Canterbury fell well short, reaching 54-5, and Elternwick's skipper D. Crewdson could feel proud of his team's commanding performance as they collected the SCBS Cup.

Earlier Elsternwick had defeated defending champions and favourites MCC Red in the semi-finals thanls to J. Dunnochie's 37 not out and 26 not out by De Ridder.

In the other semi-final Canterbury enjoyed a comfortable win against Dusit Superstars with Sanguinetti's 37 not out proving too much for the hosts.

The SCBS Plate final proved a much closer affair with Hong Kong Woodbines coming out on top in a nail-biting finish against Whitwell.

The English side batted extremely well and thanks to Paul Gordon (36 not out) and Huw Humphreys (23 not out) amassed 72-1 which looked to be enough considering the slow outfield.

However the Hong Kong side had other ideas. Once again the opening partnership of Tauseef and Ilyas Gull rose to the ioccasion.

Tauseef hit an excellent 31 and with Gull adding 23 not out the Woodbines clinched victory on the last ball of the match. It was sixes cricket at its best and a well-deserved victory for the Hong Kong boys.

Although they didn't make the Cup final, the Dusit Superstars were well compensated by winning the JVK Trophy with a commanding performance against MCC Red. The Melbourne side managed a creditable 61-3 but they found former Australian Test star Colin Miller in good form as he tonked an effortless 34 not out, ably assisted by skipper Andrew Green's 18 not out as the Superstars raced to 65-1.

Thai Thevada made up for not reaching the Cup semi-finals with a domianting display to win the SCBS Trophy against Almar. The Thai team hit 67-1 thanks to 33 from young Charlee Kader who proved to be one of the most consistent batsmen in the rournament. Almar's batsmen never got going as they struggled to 31-3.

The prestigious Rodney Parrot trophy went to MCC Blue who enjoyed a comprehensive victory over the Hua Hin Hopalongs who lived up to their name, two of their batsmen requiring runners and the rest resembling the walking wounded. MCC Blue compiled 67-2 while the Hopalongs hopped, limped and tottered to 57-5, with Knupple coming up with an amazing four stumpings for the Blues.

Unfortunately Green Parrot failed to qualify for any finals but they certainly walked away with the coveted noisiest spectators award.

Once again the high standard of umpiring played a huge part in the success of the tournament with fine work from Paul Edwards, M. Kader, Barry Anderson and David Dufall.

As always there was also excellent work by scorer Rhonda Vincent who has attended every Hua Hin Sixes from the inaugural tournament 10 years ago.

At a sumptuous awards dinner at the Dusit Resort last night, Canterbury's Glen Sanguinetti won the best batsman award with a total of 182 runs while Keegan De Ridder won the best all-rounder title taking 5-42 and scoring 99. Thai Thevada's Jackson won the best bowler award with figures of 6-42.

As for the past decade the tournament was organised by John Gill and Tom Karansuta who can look back on another successful tournament.

SCORES

Cup Final: Elsternwick 78-3 ( De Ridder 31 not out, Lynch 19) bt Canterbury 54-5 (Sanguinetti 17) Cup semi-final: Canterbury 67-3 (Sanguinetti 37 not out) bt Dusit 50-1; Elsternwick 75-2 (Dunnochie 37 not out, De Ridder 26 not out) bt MCC Red 40-3
