I think I'd rather take a walk around Hin Lek Fire, enjoy the viewpoints and keep my feet on the ground.

That aside, reading through their FAQs, there is this:
What if the cable breaks?

Is it won’t! The cable has a breaking strain in excess of 45 tons. This is compared to the maximum lift exerted by the balloon of just 2 tons. After taking into consideration the weight of all the equipment and the passengers, the balloon is actually only left with an upward pull of approximately 1/2 tons. Thus, the stress on the cable is in fact very small.
They obviously haven't heard the terms 'TIT' and 'Shit Happens'

So it would be nice to know what happens in the extremely unlikely event...........

I'm sure I've read that similar attractions have experienced problems elsewhere, outside of Thailand.

If it should break you will be charged for a longer ride. This will be collected when you land. The company will not be responsible for any immigration issues that may occur.

I have too much to do around the house today, but maybe I'll go and give it a try next weekend.

BB, personally I think the cable they're using is an over kill. When I was working offshore not a shift went by where I wasn't required to go up the derrick in a riding belt, and the wire rope on the man riding winches only a couple of tons breaking strain. So, I guess I just have quite a bit of faith in such things.

Anyway, will post some pics once I've been up.. :thumb:

Unless the cable was free, why the overkill? Wouldn't two lighter cables be safer? And what's the breaking strength of the things each end of the cable is attached to? I have no fear of heights. I have no trust of airborne rides in countries where a firm can evade liability.

Safety factors of 10 or more are not uncommon. The maximum static load may be 2 tonnes but they need to factor in the load on the cable when subjected to gusts of wind. The balloon will have a large surface area and although they will not intentionally fly in windy conditions, shit sometimes happens.

Two cables would not necessarily be safer as these could easily twist together in windy conditions and as I said….shit happens

Hello dear Hua-hin people !

My name is Alex - and i want to clear the situation.
First - our company has all nessesary documents - authority licenses of Thai ministry of civil aviation, insurances, board guarranty documentation etc. Also I have international ICAO Balloon pilot license, so we takes all responsibility accordings with Thai laws and ICAO laws. We have a permission to product a flights in all kinds of aircrafts, including airplanes, helicopters etc. Also all our flights are depend on flight limitations and weather conditions - so nobody will fly in dangerous condisions even for a miliion dollars.

Second - our ballon is not self-made attraction. It was built in USA (AeroBallon company). Company is specialised on making ballons, airships and blimps for coast guard and NASA, so it has all documents, test conclusions and special made equipment, with international quarranty.

and what about the rope - for the rope totally failure we need a freelift power 43000 Kg, and ballon with basket and 3 passengers has only 400 Kg of freelift. If "shit will happens" - ballon envelope has automatically-opened helium valwe, so you trip will not be very long. So you will not have a time for eating your Borsht and Vodka from emergency kit :neener: better to do this in our balloon restaurant. :D

if you have any questions - you can ask me here on forum.

best regards Alex,
balloon pilot

I would consider going if:

1. The balloon is certified by Lloydds of London
2. If the owner/operator can show proof of generous accident insurance for passengers
3. If the passenger basket is certified by Lloydds of London
4. If parachutes are provided.

And then again, I might just take a chance on it. Sounds tempting!
Have fun.

At 100 metres a parachute won't help much :D

4. If parachutes are provided.

I can find a parachute spesially for you if:

1) If you can show proof you international AFF skydiver's license and personal log.
2) you have the BASE jumping permission))

In real life, in aerostatics airships, included balloons - there are no parachutes, because the envelope is a parachute itself, bigger and better than any one. A 100 m jump - is a very difficult trick...for the safety we have a big pool of borsht - under the balloon, and each survived jumper also get a big cup of vodka as a present

best regards, Alex

I would not have any concerns about going for a ride.
In the very unlikely event of cable failer I would not want to be standing below it.
The wire rope maybe tested to 43 tons but I bet the real breaking strain would be far greater I have seen hoist ropes on cranes break but it is a very rare event and normally through driver error.
I was driving a crane and the last move was to load the gear box on to the ship,on doing this I could not unlock from the gear box the tide was running out fast and the load on the crane was increasing by the Minuit and the hoist overload lights came on and the alarms started buzzing. The crane has a SWL safe working load of 70 tons by the time the engineers turned up looked at the fault code on a computer at the bottom of the crane they then jumped into the lift and came up to the motor house to flick over a circuit breaker.
In the cranes operators cab my computer screen was registering 124 tons on the scales now I must say I was sweating a bit to say the least good job it was a new crane but they are always capable of a far higher load.

A couple of questions for the ballon man out of interest
1. What's the highest wind speed you will fly and does that apply to gusts or mean speed.
2. How offen will you be doing a rope examination.

Kendo.
