River Kwai Bridge Festival

Post by Big Boy »

Not Hua Hin, but I know several who may be interested. The River Kwai Bridge Festival in Kanchanaburi runs from 6 to 15 Dec'13.
Every year in late November and early December the River Kwai Bridge Festival is celebrated. Highlight of the festival is the Sound & Light Show, which tells the history of the Death Railway, the Hellfire Pass and the Bridge on the River Kwai. Once the 415 km long Death Railway runs from Thailand to Burma to support there the Japanese defence lines.

1943 - World War II: Prisoners of War built the Death Railway and the Hellfire Pass. Thousands lost their lives during the construction. The Sound & Light Show makes you to an eye-witness of the history - the rise and fall of the Railway.

Been to this twice, the sound and light show is pretty good for Thailand, especially if viewed from a floating restaurant just beside the bridge as we did. (hand held photos with a point and shoot camera in the dark so a bit shaky but you get the idea...)

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

When I was last there (long time ago), they had planted some type of explosives on the river bed. As the train slowly crossed the bridge to the sound of Colonel Bogey, the explosives in the river were let off to give the impression that the train was being bombed from above.
