Bike for Mom event, Bangkok, Aug 16

Post by Big Boy »

I'm seeing posters everywhere. In Bangkok I saw people wearing the T-shirts. It's all over Thai TV. Something is happening on 16 Aug I think.

I keep asking Mrs BB what it's about, but she's very vague.

Does anybody know what it's about? What is happening locally?

Apparently, it's a day when people are being encouraged to ride a bike for The Queen.

But where and when? Any idea? If it's an early morning thing, I'll probably join in, but I have to go somewhere later that day.

In order to celebrate the Queen's birthday the bike ride will be held on 16.8 starting at 15.00. It will take place in every province of Thailand but no specific place is mentioned. I suppose every province (municipality?) will organize its own ride.

If you look at the numbers, you can see in the middle: Those who have registered in other provinces (above that are those registered in BKK) 254863 so I would assume that they are not all coming to Bangkok, although there is no particular mention about where this is supposed to take place.

Ahh, found the menu on the upper left hand side and there's a map. Yes, it's in Bangers.

Wonder how they are going to make it happen.

Sorry. The number of registrants has already exceeded the capacity of the areas arranged for this event. We shall inform you via the website and media if more areas are arranged for the event. We would like to invite you to receive HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and the royal family members, as well as procession of cyclists along the event course. You may also participate in exhibitions on the event day free of charge.

We were caught in the traffic congestion in Bangkok after watching Hua Hin City's match. A very big crowd out to watch it though.

My girlfriend told me that there were several casualties from this event; people dying from exhaustion. This event also made it into the Guinness world records.

I noticed some news coverage on BBC International earlier yesterday which made reference to the record, but no mention of the casualties. Obviously there's a much bigger story which the foreign media are focusing on now so we'll never know if the other side of the story (if true) would have ever come through.

The news mentioned only 2 deaths. One man in his 80's around Bangkok somewhere, and one in his 40's in the south. The first from a heart attack. The second the article wasn't sure of cause. If I see the article(s) again, I'll post reference. I do recall the first article said the 80 year old was riding with his 30 year old wife. :D There were a lot of minor injuries though from crashes and the like.Pete
