Ideas for preschoolers

Post by bigideas »

This is a good website for ideas on how to help your preschooler better prepare for the challenges of schooling. www.dystalk.com, particularly their informative Top Tips for Preschoolers videos at
http://www.dystalk.com/talks/64-top-tip ... s-language.

Recently, as my daughters been at home alot with "the flu", I've been developing routines for us to do together. For example:

Monday

1. Get up, ask what she wants for breakfast and prepare it together.

2. Watch some KidsCoTV together (cable channel 46), notably "Madeline" which includes some French language, "The Wiggles" which is song and dance and "Whimsy's House" which is about kids having problems socialising.

3. Bathtime and brushing teeth

4. Painting a picture. Which means I give her a topic like "At the Beach" or "In the Garden" and she paints the sun, sky, sand and a tree or flowers, and I help her with birds and people etc

Prepare Lunch

Afternoon nap.

Other days: the above routine with the following variations.

ABC flashcard games like give P for Penguin to Papa. Give D for Dog to papa etc

Wipeclean Activity Book: ABC games, dot to dot, number match etc

Play dominoes together. Doesn't take long for her to recognise the amount, pattern and colour of dots and match it if she has one.

Computer game eg. www.starfall.com or another kids game on CD Rom.

Watch Barney song and dance together.

Play and sing music together on a guitar or keyboard or kids Xylophone.

Build something together with large lego bricks.

Just thought this might be useful with all this flu going around!

There was just a news alert a few hours ago that the cabinet is in session and considering closing all Thai schools for up to 4 weeks. IS's are already closed for summer break until the last week in August. Pete

Just heard from someone that if they do this, they'll likely cancel the October mid-year term break to make up the time.

Hope not many had vacation plans for then. Pete

Schools in the Bangkok metropolitan area are closing for about 5 days or so to allow for a thorough clean and disinfecting on account of swine flu.
Or what my Mum used to call 'a good bottoming'!

(Reported by the Bangkok Post.)

Yes, Mags is correct. Here's a quote from the Post this morning. Only some Bangkok school closed until Monday. Pete

".....City Hall's decision to close schools went against the cabinet resolution which vetoed proposals to close schools nationwide and call an early end to the current semester. It said the measure would not stop the flu's spread.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said after the cabinet meeting he did not think school closures would end virus transmission among children who would likely hang out in other crowded places such as online game shops and shopping malls when they were off school.

"The most effective way to curb infections is keeping sick people at home," the prime minister said.

Speaking on a special programme on the A (H1N1) outbreak broadcast live on government-run Channel 11 last night, Mr Abhisit did not rule out the possibility of ordering a nationwide closure of schools and other public places at some future date.

"But such measures will be implemented only when the situation is right. Over-reacting will do more harm than good," he said......"

If anyone else has any ideas for games or activities that have worked well with their preschoolers, I would be very grateful. :)

Thanks for that "Rockstar". I set up an account for a 3 year old and tried some of the activities. However, i thought that alot of them had written instructions and the level of physical difficulty with others was even beyond me! There was one where the giraffe had to eat up all the apples, using the arrow cursors on the keyboard for direction. And another where I had to draw a rabbit using the mouse as my pencil, very difficult. I think probably more suitable for 5 year olds and up.
Thanks again though!

I admit to being a bit of an IT dinosaur, and do realise that kids do need to develop computer skills at an early age. But thinking back to my own pre-school time at home it was the participation in ordinary day to day things which was both enjoyable and educational, and even layed the foundations for a lifetime of interest.
Things like having your own bit of garden to mess with and seeing how things grow. Mixing eggs and seeing how textures change. Building with dominoes rather than playing the game! Seeing how water displaces etc.
A lot of learning at that age involves getting dirty, wet, and generally making a mess. Which also leads to learning how to clean up.
Simple field trips to the beach. Observing and identifying wildlife. Collecting as many different things as they can. Looking at colour, shape and texture. Finding a pretty shell to take home and paint a picture of, or a few stones and shells to stick on a box of their own. Computer programmes and games all have their place, but can't provide the 'touchy feely' hands on dirty stuff!
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.

Above is a website with simple arts & crafts activities for preschoolers.
Enjoy them while they're young!

It's also a good website for advice.

Cheers Pete,
Yes it's a fantastic website. I mentioned it in the first post of this topic, and have been promoting it to all the teachers of young learners I know. Therefore K1 & K2 teachers at Yamsaard use it extensively. Cheers again!

There's a great dominoes game which can be bought for 300bt from the large toystall at the top of the escalator on the 3rd floor of the Market Village. (Not Toys R Us!) There are six different games you can play including, matching:
- amount of spots
- numbers 1-10 with the amount of objects
- colours
- pictures with words
- pictures and words that rhyme
and one other... I can't recall!

Very good for 2-5 year olds. We play at home alot, and I'd like to get one for my daughters class.
