^^ you forgot to mention that the driver on duty did a runner after the accident. Not sure if the police have found him yet but with so many bus drivers running away from the scene of the "accident" there really needs to be an increase in the random checking of hours worked, alcohol and drugs.

I drive back to BKK very early on Monday mornings and a reasonable percentage of bus drivers are not with the plan! After a long drive from the south maybe they are simply tired, maybe they have taken something to keep them awake, who knows?

The majority of the busses appear to be driven responsibly, even if they stay in the outside lane, But the substantial minority have a death wish. Where are the police when this takes place? Zzzzzzx

Pickups collide, 3 killed, 14 injured

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... 14-injured

SURIN - Three people were killed and 14 others injured when two pickup trucks collided in the middle of an intersection in southern Sangkha district on Monday, police said.

Pol Capt Samart Khlongdee, duty officer at Dom police station, said the crash occurred about 2.26pm at the intersection near Lantae village on Lantae - Chong Chom Road in tambon Thepraksa, which runs along Thai-Cambodian border.

One of the two vehicles was an Isuzu pickup with 14 people on board.  Thanawut Makphol, 33, the driver, his wife and son were in the truck's front section, and 11 others were sitting in the back tray.

When the vehicles collided all of those sitting in the back were thrown out onto the road.  One of them, Nan Pasda, 79, Mr Thanawut's mother-in-law, was killed. The other people in the vehicle were injured.

The other vehicle was a Toyota Mighty X with three people on board. Jamras Maiwan, 35, the driver, sustained serious injuries. His wife, Janpen, and six-year-old son, Pratya, were killed.

Villagers said accidents occurred frequently at this intersection.

Yet I read the other day in a 'not too reputable source' that the police themselves were trying to get the pickup law reversed. Saying that if a pickup has railings it would be OK.

FFS, the inside of a pickup has proper seats, walls and a roof, but I still don't feel safe without a belt on.

They need to change this law now - people are needlessly dying. Leaving it for a few days does not make the practice safe. Change the law and introduce stiff penalties for ignoring it.

Then look seriously at the other inept vehicle laws, and be just as harsh.

Just natural selection....Thai style. Let them get on with it as they know best and they complained bitterly about the government trying to introduce a sensible safety thing regarding people not traveling in the back of pickups.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. The problem here is no-one can be arsed to follow the law or do what's right (translated into informal language as 'couldn't give a shit about anything')...always me, me, me....with a massive dash of greed.

Safety here in Thailand, is nothing less than chance / a dice-roll as to surviving situations with a small plus % if you enact some personal responsibility...best case situation is that you fluke it because all the other morons destined for death on the roads and their contempt for everyone didn't meet you today.

Until the authorities realize that the problem on the roads really is to be found with the idiots that are driving on the roads and not the vehicles they control.....then this chaos will continue, regardless. There appears to be a large amount of denial/refusal to confront from those in charge that it's actually a cultural problem and that the solutions are uncomfortable and run way deeper than they are prepared to admit. Nothing new there for anyone who has lived here a while and is not an apologist.

Never under-estimate the danger of traveling via road here. :|

BB-- come on, you are an old Thai-hand. Changing the law and introducing stiffer penalties.
Problem--there are plenty of laws--they are not obeyed. There are enough police-- but they do not enforce the law or level fines to Thai drivers. The problem is cultural-- its a lack of personal responsibility and discipline.

And that in and of itself is a cultural problem. It's the 'face' concept and if those Thai people in charge had to confront these problems it would cause a loss of 'face' for them.
Thai people are also some of the biggest procrastinators I have ever met.

VAN CRASHES INTO STREET SWEEPER ON BANGKOK TOLLWAY, 2 DEAD
At least two died at about noon on Monday when a public transportation van crashed into a street sweeper on a Bangkok tollway.

The van was en route from the Navanakorn Industrial Estate in northern metro Bangkok to the Victory Monument when it struck the street sweeper on the Don Mueang Tollway near the Din Daeng exit. At least two people in the van were killed in the crash, and several were injured.

The crash caused traffic congestion near Sutthisan Junction and surrounding areas. Motorists are advised to use other routes.

Chinese tourists panic and faint as bus runs into Pattaya Sea
Many of 34 Chinese tourists fainted after the bus they were travelling in was hit by mechanical problems and ended up in the Pattaya Sea late Tuesday night.

Police said the accident happened at 10.30pm opposite Soi Na Klua 18 in Moo 5 village in Tambon Na Klua of Chon Buri province’s Bang Lamung district.

Rescuers of the Sawang Boribun Thammasathan Pattaya Foundation and local residents rushed to rescue the tourists from the bus. Most suffered minor injuries and several fainted.

The bus driver, Thaweechokchai Plaengthaisong, 49, said he was driving the tourists to a traditional Thai massage parlour but the soi was a downhill road. He tried to slow down the bus but its brake malfunctioned.

The driver said he tried to shift to a lower gear but the gear did not work either so he tried to control the bus with the steering but it rode past the road end into the beach and eventually stopped in the shallow sea.

5 KILLED IN VISA RUN VAN CRASH NEAR BORDER
Three Thais and two foreigners died when a van and pickup collided Tuesday morning in the border province of Sa Kaeo.

Police said the van was carrying a group of foreign workers to an immigration post at the Thai-Cambodian border to extend their visas. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, as the van driver was among the dead, said Korathawat Kanatat, deputy chief of Khao Chakan Police Station.

“The van approached a bend, and it was coming in fast,” Lt. Col. Korathawat said. “For some reason that we don’t know, it crashed into the center divider and went on across the lane to slam into a pickup truck.”

The impact killed two people in the truck and three in the van. The van passengers were citizens of Vietnam and Laos, Korathawat added.

Although police officers at the scene described the passengers as being workers in Thailand, the lieutenant colonel would not confirm this beyond saying all of them were carrying tourist visas.
